Of course bridie!! but perhaps you would have come accross as far superior had you used a little restraint

kittywise · 04/04/2008 16:46

across (duh)

Bridie3 · 04/04/2008 16:47

Next time I'll follow your example, kittywise. Let's just copy in your view of my son's name here, shall we?

Eliza2 · 04/04/2008 16:49

I didn't like the comment about mongol children, either.

CoteDAzur · 04/04/2008 16:52

No NO NO.

I must of shitemum's generation, as it does make me think of 'mongol'. Also of 'mango' to a lesser degree.

So many other names in the world. Why would you do this to your child?

Eliza2 · 04/04/2008 16:53

can we not use that word about Downs Children, please?

duchesse · 04/04/2008 17:02

I think Mungo is cute. Has been rather spoiled by St Mungo's hospital for magical maladies though.

Rollo?
Orlando?

(I know two brothers named those- they have two other brothers with other lovely but unusual names)

Beachcomber · 04/04/2008 17:37

You're right shitemum that 'mongol' used to be used to describe people with Down's Syndrome.

However use of the word in this way is thankfully no longer considered acceptable, by people who know better, due to its racist offensive connotations. It is an ignorant term that insults both people from Mongolia and people with Down's Syndrome.

Am now totally by this thread. Saying that, if I ever do have a boy I will be sure to go for the name Mungo as I wouldn't be swayed by opinions such as some of the nastier ones expressed on this thread.

allgonebellyup · 04/04/2008 17:40

great name

LynetteScavo · 04/04/2008 17:47

Blimey, what a thread!

Mungo is an excellent name for a child who can carry it off.

It should not bve given to some poor skinny under achieving child who will spend the rest of his life working in Pound Strether.
(Pund Strecher emplyees should be called Gaz or Daz)

It would really suit a privately educated, duffle coat wearing, very confident, intelligent, sporty child. With Scotish ancesty.

LynetteScavo · 04/04/2008 17:48

Can you tell I'm on the wine?

kittywise · 04/04/2008 18:00

If you like Bridie, I don't mind. I just think you're giving the whole subject far too much credence. This thread isn't about your son is it?

Beachcomber · 04/04/2008 18:05

I think I will have to open a bottle to calm myself down.

BTW if I ever have a Mungo he is unlikley to wear a duffle coat as people don't really wear them in France. Also would not be privately educated as I believe in state education and couldn't afford private school even if I wanted to. Said child would have a Scottish mother though so I suppose would meet some of the criteria for ridiculous stereotyping.

Beachcomber · 04/04/2008 18:11

The thing is though kittywise this thread is about Bridie's son because her child is called Mungo. I have no doubt that she is sensible enough not to care too much what a load crap folk come out with on a forum but I don't think many of us would like to have our child's name slagged off in such a way.

Do people really attach such offensive stereotypes to names in such a judgemental manner in RL or is just considered ok to do anonymously on the interweb?

MadameCh0let · 04/04/2008 18:11

Beechcomber, I haven't read the comment about Mungo sounding like Mongol, but I'd be shocked by that too. For one thing, every name sounds like something. And that term is just never used anymore by anybody with even a gram of sensibility. So to suggest that the name should be avoided for the reason that it sounds like Mongol....................

MrsMattie · 04/04/2008 18:12

How can it kick off on a thread where someone has asked us to rate the name Mungo 'cool' or 'cruel'...???? Confused.

(Hideously cruel, of course)

Beachcomber · 04/04/2008 18:51

Can you imagine thinking to yourself, you know what, maybe we won't choose Mungo as people who don't know better might say that it sounds a bit like that really outdated racist offensive ignorant term for people who suffer from a chromosomal disorder?

Mind you I suppose you might then go on to say ah yes but then I couldn't give a crap what people like that think if that is all they can say.

ITA hatrick.

Maybe it is because I am Scottish and find it easier to see the name in its historical context but I think Mungo is a good solid Scots name that is currently out of fashion. All these weird hooray henry got a job through Daddy in the city type stereotypes are baffling me.

Considering that St Mungo is the patron saint of Glasgow, city known for being proud of its gritty, working classness I'm LOL at the pretentious comments too. Slight case of haven't got a farkin clue what I'm on about but can't keep my mouth shutitis.

Am still reeling at 'mongol' posts.

meglet · 04/04/2008 20:14

I predict a huge rush of people naming their LO's Mungo after this thread. I love it even more now. ((marches off to convince DP its a good idea))

Bridie3 · 04/04/2008 20:17

That would be nice, meglet!

Yeah, Beachcomber, I'm smiling imagining calling a Glaswegian pretentious. Not the kind of thing you'd do on a Friday night.

This thread is going to backfire! Mungo the new Jack??

I used to think that Mungo was an ok name but a bit too Posh, but now that I have been totally re-educated about the fact that St Mungo was the 'wandering celt' and the patron saint of single mothers (i love that idea!!) and that he rowed from Glasgow to Dublin (brrrr, cold) I now really like the name
