Hello!

We are currently choosing a name for our first daughter and we have narrowed it down to Lara and Amber.

Is Lara a suitable name for England in your opinion?

I would appreciate any feedback you have on the names.

Thanks in advance

I prefer Lara of the two - I’m not the biggest fan of Amber. It’s definitely suitable for England!

FayCarew · 24/04/2024 14:00

Both are fine in the UK.
Lara seems a bit nothingy and lots of shortish L names like Lyra are popular. I much prefer Laura.
Amber seems a bit 1990s but I like it and it seem to have more about it than Lara.

I had forgotten about Clara being popular. Still Team Amber here.

Lara out of the two! But prefer Clara as another option

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/04/2024 14:03

I love both Lara and Amber - great names! Personally I would probably choose Lara and it’s certainly very suitable for England! :)

mimiscards · 24/04/2024 14:11

I prefer Amber :)

Amber

theduchessofspork · 24/04/2024 14:13

Lara is lovely and quite popular

Amber is fine, I’m not personally keen on it

Holstomorrow · 24/04/2024 14:19

I like them both, but prefer Lara

BoleynMemories13 · 24/04/2024 18:15

I have no idea what you mean by 'is Lara a suitable name in England?' Why on Earth wouldn't it be?

Lara is gorgeous. I much prefer it to Amber.

salamithumbs · 24/04/2024 18:50

I like them both but slightly prefer Lara!

shoopshoopdedoo · 24/04/2024 19:17

I like both. I think I prefer Lara

MuddledMadge · 24/04/2024 21:19

Amber is a lifelong favourite of mine.

Sorry putting way too much thought into this but on second thoughts I prefer Amber 🤣

@BoleynMemories13

when you're not born & brought up in a country. It's difficult to know how 'suitable' a name is.

blueshoes · 24/04/2024 21:27

Dd was almost called Amber. As you can guess, I favour Amber.

Lara is too Lara Croft. Of course you could equally say Amber is Amber Heard.

YeahComeOnThen · 24/04/2024 21:28

@NurturingNebula

i think Clara is much nicer if that's an option.

Amber is a bit 'dated' and I don't much like the abbreviations.

i don't like Lara (sorry) I find it quite 'harsh' and my cousin has spent her whole life explaining it's LARA not Laura.

blueshoes · 24/04/2024 21:37

I find Lara slightly harsh as well. I imagine someone with high cheek bones. Maybe not a bad thing. Can see how it could get confused with Laura or Clara.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 24/04/2024 21:40

Lara definitely of the two. It sounds elegant and more classic (probably due to its similarity to very classic Laura plus Dr Zhivago) and is better used internationally too.

Amber is nice enough, but a different style to me - more boho quirky, less elegant.

SummerInSun · 24/04/2024 21:44

Lara is a great name. Amber sounds a bit American to me?

SabreIsMyFave · 24/04/2024 21:50

Depends on the surname. Lara reminds me of Tomb Raider! Not a bad thing to be associated with though. Smile

Amber is cute.

Either one, but yeah depends on the surname.

NahNeedsGarlic · 24/04/2024 21:51

Amber. I’ve always liked it, and the two kids named Lara that I know are both appallingly behaved. Admittedly that’s swaying my opinion.

MissingMoominMamma · 24/04/2024 21:52

I know a Lara who is an absolute nightmare (adult), so my vote goes to Amber!

I get that. I just wondered why Lara's 'suitably' was being questioned over Amber. Not that there's anything wrong with either, but both are in regular usage over here so I can't see any reason why one would be considering more 'suitable' than the other. I guess I just found suitable a strange term as it suggests there may be something wrong with it.

Definitely nothing wrong with Lara OP, it's in and around the top 100 so is well used here.

Theoldwoman · 24/04/2024 22:06

Lara, one hundred percent.

i know a ton of Ambers. Most of them are not nice, bullies etc.

Like,
I'd never call my daughter Myra - Myra Hindley.
Or even Lucy now - (Lucy Letby)
