Just out of curiosity; how would you pronounce the name “Tage”?

It’s an older Swedish name. We’re thinking about it for Elise’s and Viola’s little brother, but we’re not UK based so wouldn’t know how it would be pronounced in English speaking countries.

Rhyming with Page

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/04/2024 19:41

Tayg.

redtinaddict · 23/04/2024 19:41

@TheYearOfSmallThings Me too!

MississippiAF · 23/04/2024 19:41

I wouldn’t have a clue, tbh

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 23/04/2024 19:42

With absolutely no context (and not knowing it's Swedish) eg, seeing it written down on a class list etc I'd assumed it rhymes with Page. I'm sure that's not the case but do think it would be the default here in the UK.

DappledThings · 23/04/2024 19:42

I'd hazard a guess at TAY-guh. Notnsire how to represent the g sound. A hard g but with almost a tiny bit extra in the throat. Almost g-uh but only syllable. That probably makes no sense and is nowhere near the pronunciation anyway!

ZipZapZoom · 23/04/2024 19:43

Like stage but with no S.

RadoxMoon · 23/04/2024 19:43

Like Target but without the T at the end

GlobetrottingPercy · 23/04/2024 19:44

I would also guess like sage / page

KirstenBlest · 23/04/2024 19:44

Ta-yeh?

Alchemistress · 23/04/2024 19:44

I mean I suppose to rhyme with Page but now I'm thinking maybe Tah- hey like the yogurt Fage ? Confused

SweedeyTodd · 23/04/2024 19:45

That’s actually how it it is pronounced in Sweden, I didn’t think anyone would read it that way! 🤗

I think if you hadn’t mentioned that it’s from Sweden then most people would think rhymes with Page

DolceGustoooohCoffee · 23/04/2024 19:47

Ta-geh

AnnaMagnani · 23/04/2024 19:48

Without context Tayge.

With context I know how to pronounce it.

Honestly I wouldn't use it, English speakers struggle with the Scandinavian -e.

My name is still nice without it pronounced thankfully but my poor DM's name sounds like a mangled mess.

KirstenBlest · 23/04/2024 19:48

Ta(r)geh was my first thought, but thought Sven-Goran Eriksson.

SweedeyTodd · 23/04/2024 19:48

Thank you so much for all the replies! It’s pronounced more like “Target” but without the t at the end (and the r being silent). Brilliantly put by one poster!

Seeing all your input I’m thinking maybe Tage would be a bit weird outside of Scandinavia, for the majority anyway. Would that sway you in your decision?

I wouldn’t be sure but because of German connections would guess at ‘tah-geh’

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2024 19:49

I would have said Tarj. But what do I know? Grin

Washingtonmachine · 23/04/2024 19:49

Teige like beige

Itsbeenabadday · 23/04/2024 19:49

I would say to rhyme with Page but there are so many names from different languages and also some obscure English ones, that once you tell people, it doesn't really matter x

Olika · 23/04/2024 19:49

If I saw this in the UK without knowing it's a Swedish name I would def say as Page but knowing it's a Swedish name I would say it as written.

LifeofBrienne · 23/04/2024 19:49

I wouldn’t even attempt to pronounce it without asking first.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/04/2024 19:49

Tay-g. With a hard g (I think I mean hard?!) almost guh, but without the uh. Not juh. Iyswim.

Yes this is what I meant! Much better put!

I think it would just be one people would struggle with and have to learn how to say the first time.
