Just out of curiosity; how would you pronounce the name “Tage”?

It’s an older Swedish name. We’re thinking about it for Elise’s and Viola’s little brother, but we’re not UK based so wouldn’t know how it would be pronounced in English speaking countries.

Taj or Tage to rhyme with sage, but probably Taj.

I think if you hadn’t mentioned that it’s from Sweden then most people would think rhymes with Page

I’m seeing that now, it wouldn’t have crossed my mind though if so many hadn’t pointed this out. Glad I asked but also saddened I did in a way 😅

Taj like the Taj Mahal.

AnnaMagnani · 23/04/2024 19:56

My parents spent a lot of time working out a name that worked in both languages (and still didn't totally achieve it)

It cuts both ways as it turns out my DF's name was so difficult to pronounce in her Scandi language they gave up and ILs always called him nickname.

Without context Tayge.

With context I know how to pronounce it.

Honestly I wouldn't use it, English speakers struggle with the Scandinavian -e.

My name is still nice without it pronounced thankfully but my poor DM's name sounds like a mangled mess.

Thank you for this, it’s a very good point.

Very curious about yours and your DM’s names now 😆

Rhymes with beige.

StopStartStop · 23/04/2024 19:59

Targuh.

Emdubz70 · 23/04/2024 20:00

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2024 19:49

I would have said Tarj. But what do I know? Grin

Me too.

takemeawayagain · 23/04/2024 20:01

I'm still struggling with how to say it even knowing it's target without the t! Does that mean it's said Tar-guh or Targ-eh or is the end sound more subtle that either of those? Unfortunately I think it's probably going to be mangled in the UK.

Olika · 23/04/2024 19:49

If I saw this in the UK without knowing it's a Swedish name I would def say as Page but knowing it's a Swedish name I would say it as written.

Same initially Tay-gih like Page.. but knowing Swedish Tarr-ghay

DoreenonTill8 · 23/04/2024 20:03

What about Lars, Karl, Erik?

Tahg-eh I think is another way to put it, hope that makes more sense!

Lovely names, and certainly easier to pronounce 😁

Thank you so much for all the replies! It’s pronounced more like “Target” but without the t at the end (and the r being silent). Brilliantly put by one poster!

Seeing all your input I’m thinking maybe Tage would be a bit weird outside of Scandinavia, for the majority anyway. Would that sway you in your decision?

It would sway me, yes. I wouldn’t give a child a name they will have to constantly correct the pronunciation of. They will also have to learn to recognise being called my a different name, as they will constantly have it rhymed with page or beige.

CurlewKate · 23/04/2024 20:06

If I was told it was a Swedish bane, I wouldn't try, I'd ask. Otherwise, as in Page.

Be aware, there is an Irish name spelled Tadgh which is pronounced something like Taig. Just to muddy the waters.

WorriedMutha · 23/04/2024 20:07

I wouldn't be able to get beyond it being the German word for days so I would instinctively pronounce it the German way, sounding a little like Lager.

Thank you for taking the time!
Would you still feel like this if you were based in Sweden? It would therefore only be an issue if you were to move outside of Scandinavia

Like page but with a T

Soontobe60 · 23/04/2024 20:11

Rhyming with badge.

KirstenBlest · 23/04/2024 20:12

If you're in Sweden and it's a Swedish name it will be fine.

I've worked with people with names that don't sound how they look and you soon get used to it, but there will be the odd person who won't manage to get it right.

Oh, sorry if I misunderstood. If I lived in a country where everyone would know the correct pronunciation, I wouldn’t think twice about choosing it.

Weighnow · 23/04/2024 20:18

Hmm, in my head it it said Tayg, but I don't know why because clearly it's spelt to rhyme with Page and AFAIK I haven't come across the name before.

SweedeyTodd · 23/04/2024 20:22

I should have stressed that point more in my OP, entirely on me!

Thank you for that, I guess I just don’t want to choose a name that could cause him major issues in the future. Do realise this could be well overthinking things of course…it’s from experience though.

If you don’t live in an English-speaking country, does it really matter how it is pronounced there? If you like the name, use it. When on holidays or later in life if your son moves abroad, then he can tell people how to pronounce it.

patchworkpal · 23/04/2024 20:23

Taj
