Robin for a girl

FantaHouse · 21/04/2024 16:14

DD is due in 8w.

I love the name Robin (as in the bird) but DH thinks it's Robyn for a girl and Robin for a boy.

I hadn't known that. I thought Robyn was just an alternative, American?!, spelling.

I thought Robin was for boys and girls. I'm really not keen on the y spelling. Not sure why!

DH is persuadable but would DD spend her life correcting the spelling if we go with Robin?

Robin is fine for a girl. It’s short for Robert for the male name, so it being short for Roberta works exactly the same
Robyn is horrendous and a bit cringey.

DilemmaEmma2 · 24/04/2024 17:31

My daughter is called Robyn, Robin is predominantly used as a boys name.

Bit rude and offensive.

No, not really, but I should say, “I think Robyn is horrendous and a bit cringey.”

I’m a Robyn. I don’t usually have to tell people it’s with a Y rather than an I. Once they see/hear that I’m female they almost always correctly spell it as Robyn.

I’ve always really liked my name, if that helps.

Notcms · 24/04/2024 19:35

I know 2 little girls both Robyn.
I think Robin is far more masculine.
Beautiful name.

Theoldwoman · 25/04/2024 12:32

I’ve only ever known Robin for boys and Robyn for girls.

fingfong · 16/06/2024 21:46

I have a Robin who is 19. Robin was a popular name for girls in the 1920s and '30s. I think the spelling with a y is a bit naff 😊

user1492757084 · 17/06/2024 06:12

Boys are only called Robin.

Girls can be either Robin or Robyn. Heard plenty of both - all ages.

bridgetreilly · 18/06/2024 19:43

I’m with you: Robin is for either and is nicer than Robyn.

Longdarkcloud · 20/06/2024 20:42

I much prefer the spelling Robin. It’s a lovely name

FantaHouse · 20/06/2024 22:37

Well DD has arrived and she is....

Robin Louisa

We both love it. Suits her perfectly. Thank you all for setting my mind at rest. Even the "it's definitely only for boys" posts helped validate DH's thinking but with plenty of other posts helping him to come to the right conclusion...

Beautiful name, I hope you're both doing well.

FantaHouse · 20/06/2024 23:01

Thank you @Morwenscapacioussleeves

It was one of those births where I think DH would have let me name her anything, as a reward. But job done - we are both home and well.

I love the name Robin for a girl, excellent choice!

FantaHouse · 20/06/2024 23:08

Thank you @Blueberry40 I'm in some kind of hormone high where I feel I totally got it right. 😆

Gorgeous. Love the classic spelling of Robin with its slightly quirky unisex style combined with an elegant, feminine traditional name like Louisa. Great choice.

mathanxiety · 20/06/2024 23:45

All the girls I know of this name are Robyn.

They are not American and it's not an Americanism.

mathanxiety · 20/06/2024 23:46

OMGitsnotgood · 21/04/2024 19:39

Whether you prefer it or not, Robin is not the usual spelling for girls. If you are happy that she has her name continuously spelt incorrectly, has to keep correcting spellings,or having people think she's male (if they haven't met her) then that is fine.
I know quite a few people with unusual spellings of their names and it's been a bit of a burden.

Yes to this.

What, like Claire or Clare, and Lyn, Lynn or Lynne?

Alyvia
Saira

Jaxson/ Jaxon
Jaymes
Mykal

Both spellings are in the 2022 ONS list of girl baby names, Robin much less frequent. Although I love the bird, I don't like the name as I don't like most unisex names, but I'd personally prefer the bird spelling of Robin.

slackademic · 21/06/2024 00:10

Congratulations. I think Robin with an i is lovely name for a girl - it's the name chosen for my 1yo GD - I wasn't mad about the name to begin with TBH but I love it now - Robyn with a y does look dated to me. Anecdotally I think the name Robin, for a girl, is increasing in popularity ATM.

Longdarkcloud · 21/06/2024 08:15

Congratulations OP. Enjoy your gorgeous little Robin Louisa.
I have a surname that has 2 variants and it has never been a problem to say, that’s with an ‘a’. When Robin is old enough to be spelling her name she just has to say, that’s Robin with an ‘I’, but I think most will just use the default spelling for Robin the bird. Funny how with this name the spelling seems to make such a difference —- people like us feel Robin has something Robyn does not and people that prefer the latter just worry about convention.
You can now have fun using robin motifs to decorate Robin’s stuff.

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/06/2024 09:02

Congratulations! What a beautiful name 🥰

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/06/2024 09:20

Yep, Robyn to me just doesn’t feel as classic as Robin - a bit like Jayne, Kathryn and Carolyn as opposed to Jane, Katherine and Caroline.
