Robin for a girl

FantaHouse · 21/04/2024 16:14

DD is due in 8w.

I love the name Robin (as in the bird) but DH thinks it's Robyn for a girl and Robin for a boy.

I hadn't known that. I thought Robyn was just an alternative, American?!, spelling.

I thought Robin was for boys and girls. I'm really not keen on the y spelling. Not sure why!

DH is persuadable but would DD spend her life correcting the spelling if we go with Robin?

I always thought it was with a y for a girl, but there are 2 female robins in my daughter’s class!

JaninaDuszejko · 21/04/2024 17:12

Before the 1980's Robin was firmly a boy's name in the UK.

Well I knew a female Robin in the UK who was born in the 1920s so that's not true.

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/04/2024 17:32

I would assume Robin was for a boy, if I just saw it written down. But that’s not the end of the world, mostly you meet people before seeing their name written down.

Ankylo · 21/04/2024 17:33

I think of it the other way around - it is more commonly spelt 'Robin' in America (like the female character in Stranger Things). Robyn is top of our list if we have a girl next. I only know it spelt 'Robyn' for girls in the UK.

RedRobyn2021 · 21/04/2024 18:28

Love it, either spelling is lovely

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/04/2024 19:11

I prefer Robin spelling for a girl ; when I was young it was the usual spelling , male and female.

Nicebloomers · 21/04/2024 19:15

I MUCH prefer Robin.

Username947531 · 21/04/2024 19:17

Makes me think of the Robin from the chalet school books.

FantaHouse · 21/04/2024 19:34

This is interesting- thanks! So it looks as if Robin is a real option. I'm very keen on being able to say "....like the bird".

Whether you prefer it or not, Robin is not the usual spelling for girls. If you are happy that she has her name continuously spelt incorrectly, has to keep correcting spellings,or having people think she's male (if they haven't met her) then that is fine.
I know quite a few people with unusual spellings of their names and it's been a bit of a burden.

OP just to say this isn’t my experience at all. People either spell it with an I or ask.

I have a female cousin called Robin, short for Robina. I loathe Robyn.

Okay....

In which case it's fine. Not the experience I had with people at work with names that were spelt or pronounced differently. Some found it very frustrating and upsetting.

Whatsitcalled38 · 21/04/2024 19:49

Robin in how I met your mother is a woman. I think it looks nice as a girls name.

FrannieGallops · 21/04/2024 19:50

I have a friend named Robyn. It’s a nice name, and should be this spelling for a girl imo.

SquigglePigs · 21/04/2024 19:51

You an use either. I know two little ones with that name, one with each spelling plus an adult with the y version.

I wouldn't worry about the "having to correct/spell it" comments. I have an unusual name that I've always had to spell out and it's hardly a big deal. There are so many names with common spelling variants before you get to creative ones, so I think confirming name spellings is hardly unusual.

plumblina · 21/04/2024 20:07

It's a good point that a gender neutral name can actually be an advantage to women. I have a very 'girly' name and people often assume I'm going to be younger than I am for some reason, it doesn't seem like a very strong name either. I've always wanted to be called something like Sam because of it.

And sort of 'so what' if people thinks she's a boy anyway? In this data and age it hardly matters. Nor does having to spell it for people, I have to do that often and it's not a problem.

AmyandPhilipfan · 21/04/2024 20:12

Well I have a standard name with the traditional spelling and have still spent my life having to spell it out for people so I wouldn't worry about that. And if your daughter is saying her name for someone to write down she can just say 'Robin - with an i' and the writer will know how to spell it.

Although I know it's unisex I think it suits females better anyway.

If it's good enough for Mr and Mrs Ellacott...

Holstomorrow · 21/04/2024 21:31

I would spell it with a y for a girl.

Gcsunnyside23 · 21/04/2024 21:42

Love both spellings for a girl. lovely name

My daughter is called Robin and apart from correcting MIL on the day she was born we've never had an issue. I think Robyn is fine, but I specifically wanted to name her after the bird and also feel that it is somehow a prettier name spelt -in.

I came here to type precisely this!

MumChp · 21/04/2024 21:43

We thought of Robin for youngst dd. It doesn't work well in my native country so we did settle for it. But it's beautiful.
Robyn works well but I like Robin better.

My Robin is in her twenties and has never had a problem.

Mumaway · 21/04/2024 21:45

YN for a girl usually. She's your child though, so whatever you like, but remember she'll have to spell it out her whole life either way...
