Impressions about Maristella?

Just that, really… what would you think?

Have you ever come across one in person or in the media, or would you think it’s made up (without googling, ideally!)?

Would you naturally assume a particular ethnicity/background/religion?

And do you like it?

I've never heard it before and not keen. It sounds like two names joined together.

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 19/04/2024 20:34

Maristela with one "L"

VladimirVsVolodymyr · 19/04/2024 20:35

All 3 South American catholics.

justasoul · 19/04/2024 23:18

Common in my (South American) home country. The ones I know are close to my parents in age, 60 - 70, so not quite granny chic yet.

GreatestGatsby · 20/04/2024 00:42

This has been so helpful and also really made me laugh—thanks, everyone!

FWIW, those who guessed it’s a real name and Spanish/Portuguese/South American were right, and quite a Catholic one (yes, from Stella Maris, Our Lady Star of the Sea, so lots of ships and coastal churches named something similar).

Also led me to do some googling and turns out there is a Stella bacteria, and also that Maris Piper spuds have greater name recognition than I ever imagined possible…

Sounds like a skin infection to me

Inthetropics · 20/04/2024 01:44

Common name in Brazil but usually spelled 'Maristela' here.

I like it.

But I once started a thread asking if anyone else likes the name Cydonia (nobody did) so make of that what you will.

LOL, what did you end up choosing?

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2024 03:23

It's way too fussy for me, but it's pretty, I'll give you that.

I like Mariella, Estelle, Estella and Stella but even those I find on the frilly side.

Maristella is just too much name - I'm aware it's a real name, it's just too fancy for me.

user1492757084 · 20/04/2024 04:18

Not a fave for me.

I like some similar names more..
Mary Ellen
Marie Ellen
Stella
Estelle
Mariella
Marcella
Marina
Mariposa

I wouldn’t worry about the bacteria connection, it’s just a description and one I pretty much never come across despite working with bacteria every day. No-one will make that connection. It doesn’t trip off the tongue easily in English though, depend how much that bothers you!

It sounds like it should be a brand of wine.

Or a fancy beer from a micro-brewery.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 19/04/2024 18:50

Sounds like a brand of oral contraceptive to me

Sorry OP but agree.

PineappleTime · 20/04/2024 06:53

I like Maristela for a Brazilian baby but not in England, it's just too fussy and too much. Many names sound lovely in the accent they come from (Amelie, ottilie are two examples that are very popular these days) but sound a bit pedestrian in an English accent. I would avoid.

I thought cruise ship. Sorry OP.

PosyPrettyToes · 20/04/2024 07:33

It sounds like a cystitis medication.

caringcarer · 20/04/2024 07:42

Marie Stella sounds so much better or Stella Marie. Definitely not all into one name, better as 2 names.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/04/2024 07:43

Not keen. Had a friend called Marinella years ago. Her parents were Greek. Always thought it was pretty.

GridlockedKey · 20/04/2024 07:44

I nearly like it though! There would be names similar to it that will be nice.

I'm in Italy so yes, heard a few as nickname/short form for Maria Stella.

Not for a good 20 years though. Maria + other name combos are still fairly common but Stella is quite unusual these days.

shellyleppard · 20/04/2024 07:46

Sounds like a brand of German beer 🍺

Cydonia?? That's a new one on me

theduchessofspork · 20/04/2024 14:32

Is it just putting Stella Maris together?

Anyway it does sound like a cruise ship sorry.

Stella Maris I would assume was Catholic, although most people wouldn’t because they’d just know her as Stella. I’d stick with Stella Maris - star of the sea is a nice reference.

Ioverslept · 20/04/2024 14:35

Sounds like the drink Mistela, a sweet wine from Spain. Never heard it and I imagine if someone was called it people would quickly shorten it as it has 4 syllables

BreatheAndFocus · 20/04/2024 14:55

Sounds like a pustular illness to me, so I don’t like it. Are you thinking about Stella Maris?

Just use Stella or Maria or one of the variations of Maria/Mary.
