Opinions on the name Milo for a boy? I love it but just questioning the wearability on an adult, but not sure if I’m overthinking it.

Yes I love it. Every single riding school I ever went to as a kid (lots) had a Jack Russell called Milo. Still love it for a human though too and know a few.

Yozzer87 · 19/04/2024 12:59

I quite like it. I remember about 15 years ago it was a lot more common for dogs as well as boys but it's not heard as much now. An adult man called Milo would be fine I think.

AliceMcK · 19/04/2024 13:00

It’s a no from me, two reasons it reminds me of the drink Milo in NZ & I know at least 5 dogs called Milo. I have a “dogs” name and all my life when introduced to people I’d get “ o I have a dog called ….”

Moreteaandchocolate · 19/04/2024 13:00

I like it and think it’s fine for an adult - this new generation will grow up with a whole range of different names so it won’t sound out of place in that context I don’t think.

RebelWithCause · 19/04/2024 13:00

No, you're not overthinking it. It's 'cutesy', a bit try-hard and overused What's wrong with the more grown-up 'Miles'? You could always use Milo as a nn if you must.

Crochetedtractor · 19/04/2024 13:02

I'd go with Miles and give Milo as a NN. That way he can decide if he finds Milo too cutesy as he enters adulthood.

Milo isn't a nickname for 'Miles', though.

Milo’s a popular name. It’s in the top 100 after a very steep rise, so definitely wearable for an adult. Two syllable names ending in an O sound are super trendy at the moment.

It's one of the current 3 most common male cat names (along with Simba and Loki). That would put me of using it for a human.

Who decides what can and can't be a nn for a name though? Miles and Milo are close enough that it works well as a nn IMO.

oldnorsesaga · 19/04/2024 14:34

I see Miles and Milo as parallel names rather than nicknames for each other... and don't see anything cutesy in Milo, although I prefer Miles. To me, they are equally "pet names" as both are short and pets generally have shorter names, but obviously they both aren't unusable on adult since they are both "older" names, with Milo being seen more as "hipster" name and being slightly trendy in a way people are choosing it as less popular, but familiar alternative to already popular names.

that said, I prefer Miles, this spelling only.

GlobalCitz · 19/04/2024 14:37

For me (and every Aussie, Kiwi and Southern European) it's a (delicious) chocolate drink.

Not for me, and I'm Southern European.
Besides, plenty of products have brand names that are names IRL. Doesn't made them unusable.

It's a name in itself though. It's like saying John is just a nickname for Jonathan, or Amy is a nickname for Amelia, when all are names in themselves.

YomAsalYomBasal · 19/04/2024 14:59

For me it's either a really annoying Tweenie or that hot chocolate, (which you can buy in supermarkets here btw, not like it's exotic) but that's my own weird outlook!
I do know an adult Milo and it works just fine for him.

Negangirlxx · 19/04/2024 15:01

Personally I’m not keen, it’s more a pet name. I’ve seen a couple of dogs with the name, and the odd cat. That would put me off tbh.

35andThriving · 19/04/2024 15:04

It's a lovely name. It would work well for an adult as well as a child. It makes me think of The Phantom Tollbooth book. I do love Miles as a name too though, and love the fact it's an anagram of Smile.

elisamun · 19/04/2024 15:11

Am I the only person who's never known a cat or dog called Milo, only humans!

PigeonPigPie · 19/04/2024 15:14

Don't like Milo but love Miles

OctaviaRedQueen · 19/04/2024 15:21

Every other dog I know is called Milo so it would be a no from me on that basis.

YeahComeOnThen · 19/04/2024 15:23

@AliceMcK

saved me typing it!!

plus here's the Tweenies character!!

sorry @User85468 it's a big fat NO from me

Nameymcnameface1 · 19/04/2024 15:29

It's the dog from the mask....shhhhomebody stop me

agoodusername · 19/04/2024 15:31

I absolutely love it, loved it enough to use it for my own son!

The main character from the Disney Atlantis movie is also called Milo 😁

BodyKeepingScore · 19/04/2024 15:34

It wouldn't be for me. I know four Milo's and they're all dogs.

DaisyChain505 · 19/04/2024 15:39

Milo is a dogs name IMO
