Dh and I can’t find any girls name (half German)

It’s an absolute nightmare, I love the name Elodie and always have done but dh hates it. He wants something that reflects his German heritage but can’t give me any names apart from his grandmothers name, we do also have a very German surname which I’m conscious of. I’ve said I’m happy for this as a middle name however I don’t like the name myself. We’ve already decided on Finn for a boy, which we both love.
TIA

She was told by her family to call herself 'Natasha' in the UK as it sounds more international but we all insisted on calling her by her real name, Katinka, because it was so nice.

Why not just go for a name that reflects your heritage? If your child’s surname reflects their German heritage on their father’s side then it seems more equitable to have a first name that reflects their mother’s heritage too.

The girls in DS’s KiTa had pretty standard names I’m afraid!

Lila, Naomi, Julia, Millie, Laura, Sophia, Aimee, Eva.

Another antiquated name. The youngest Petra I know is 50. And it’s also pronounced differently in German.

MN is full of antiquated names.

Loads of little Petras in other parts of Europe - it was #15 for girls in Croatia last year and top 50 in other parts of the Balkans & Hungary too. I think the combo of being familiar/traditional (maybe a name used by grandparents?) + being usable in many European languages + the connection with the place name trend / connotations of adventure and travel that are giving it a boost.

Currently going through these with dh!

Also if you like finn, how about frigg?

The English name Friday is derived from Old English and means “day of Frigg"

Sabina/Sabine
Eleri (El-air-y) Welsh but lovely

neady · 15/04/2024 00:28

Nina is beautiful

Love the name Finn. For girls how about Mila, Romy, Frida or Leni. All work in both languages and are fresh not old fashioned

Yeah but these are suggested to people who understand all the implications of using them. The OP can’t and it doesn’t much sound like her husband can either. It’s potentially tough for the kid to have a name that doesn’t fit in anywhere, not in Germany and not in the UK.

Crazeland · 15/04/2024 17:36

Erika is a German friend of mine, love her name

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 15/04/2024 17:43

Fenna
Not German, I know - but a good mix of Frieda and Paulina

@NC463
Where did he grow up? Does he have a German passport? Does he speak German? I'm half German but consider myself completely German as I grew up there. It's different if the connection is less strong.

You can’t call a child Frigg in the UK!

I thought you meant as for some dialects frig is a very mild swear exclamation

Zoflorabore · 16/04/2024 01:10

My late dgm was German, my mum is half German and I’m a quarter German. My dgm died when I was 6 months pregnant with my dd who is now 13. I gave her dgm’s name as a middle name which is Albertine.

my mum told me a story when I was younger that if she had been born a boy she would have been called Wolfgang 🤣

I love then name Ottilie which is my great grandmother’s name but she was known as Ottie. Speaking to my mum about her visiting Germany as a child, meeting her cousins etc, most of them had very traditional German names but now they’re much more modern.

good luck with your name choosing and your new baby.

It’s a bit more than a mild exclamation in the UK.

ThePoetsWife · 16/04/2024 08:42

German grandmother here - Lilo, short for Leisellotte

Would be spelled Lieselotte, also a very very old fashioned name. Lilo is Pronounced differently in German too.
