Thoughts on these nicknames that would be used 95% of the time for full names.

Lily
Millie
Liv/Livi
Mia
Emmy

Anyone have experience with these names? Likes/dislikes?

Lily and Mia are names in their own right.

We’ve had two ponies called Millie, I don’t like it particularly but better as it is than as a diminutive for Millicent or Camilla.

Liv is awful, though Olivia is lovely.

Emmy means Emmy Lou Harris to me. Emma and Emily don’t need changing.

Lily - lovely name in its own right.

Millie - lovely as a short version for Amelia / Emily, I personally wouldn’t use it as a full name on the bc

Liv/Livi - nice as a short version of Olivia - again I think it’s a bit informal to use on the bc

Mia - love this as a full name

Emmy - love as a short version of Emily / Emmeline / Emilia. I wouldn’t use as a full name.

Lily - short for Elizabeth? I'd just use Lily. Not keen on other names that would shorten to Lily
Millie - not keen but I like Molly
Liv/Livi - Livia is nice but not Liv or Livi. I see Livid
Mia - short for Maria. I don't like Mia
Emmy - ok short for Emmeline, but I'm not keen on Emmeline, prefer Emma or Emily

They’re all fine. Quite bland and you’ll find several of each in most classes, but there’s nothing wrong with them.

I just don’t understand the point in naming a child one name but calling them another. My mother did this to me and I hate it and it causes a surprising number of issues.

I don't understand why you wouldn't give options. Emmeline can call herself Emme or Em or Emmy but Emme can't decide to be Emmeline.

All fine.

I like Liv/Livi and Emmy best. They're a bit...cooler and a nickname should be cool I think!

Millie, Lily and Mia are all quite popular names and a bit insipid and girlie imo.

Also, be aware that if you pick a very popular nickname and she goes to school with other kids with that name, she'll get called her full name to allow the kids where that's their actual name to not be confused all the time.

Lily, Mia and Emmy aren't nicknames - they're just regular names.

Surely the whole point of nick names is the person or their friends chooses them - they evolve. Seems like weird to choose a long unusable name then decide in advance what the nick name will be.

Why not though? - If you can shorten a name to make a nickname, why is it seen as unacceptable to lengthen one? In fact with names like Eve/Evie and Anne/Annie, the nicknames are longer.

I can’t understand why you would. Nobody needs more than 1 name

Lily, Millie and Mia are just bland overused girls names.

I would give her a full name but considering which nicknames are common for them first and if there’s anything glaring that should discourage me from one versus another

A millie is a derogatory term where we are

Like Liv and Emmy

Needs? No. Wants? Maybe. DD has a long name I liked, but she doesn't. So she uses the short version. DH uses his middle name. I only ever use my short version and I have two versions of that, depending on when people met me, they call me one or t'other.

And @NannyR those names are both -ie or -y which is just a cute version, yes longer but not really different. How do you lengthen 'Emmy' which was one of OP's suggestions? It doesn't work like shortening longer names does.

I think it’s important to know and like the possible nicknames for a name you’re choosing since they could come up. And yes they might evolve and change but also can sort of happen based on what you call them from the get go

Never realized that about Millie. Where are you from if you don’t mind me asking

@BeFirmZebra , it can cause issues like people not knowing that your name is really Emilia not Millie, so things like post redirection, plane ticket not matching the passport, email being set up as [email protected] not [email protected], etc
Also if you never use the full name or dislike it, it's a bit weird to be called it.

I have the opposite problem - I'm something like Jill and get people assuming I'm really Gillian/Jillian.

Northern Ireland. I have also heard it used in Scotland. Basically slang for a chavvy girl

Good points! I guess I’ve never really thought about those aspects because my own name doesn’t have any nickname potential. So I thought it might be cool to have options. Especially if they grow to not be a fan of their longer name.

Lily has always been a name in its own right, it’s an obvious flower name. So it would be my pick! Even if people go for Lilia or Lillian as a longer name, it’s also fine as it is.

Second choice Mia - again because it is considered a name in its own right now (like Jack was originally for John but some aren’t aware of that now) - even a few people still put Maria or Marina on the BC.

I find the sound of Milly, Emmy, Livi quite cutesy - maybe because I would assume they were diminutives (particularly the latter two).

Liv is used as a given name in Scandinavia but despite US actress Liv Tyler, I don’t think the name is very well known here.

What issues did it cause? Genuinely curious

Company flights being booked in the wrong name.

Issues with companies house.

Issues with college enrolment.

Issues with NI number.

Issues with tax returns.

Issues with qualification/education certificates.

The wrong name can invalidate a lot of things and it’s absolutely exhausting and tedious to have to get things corrected at the time.

Starting new companies has been awful because I have never once been asked if I prefer the shortened version. Therefore email addresses have always been in the ‘wrong’ name, leading to me constantly having to correct colleagues, clients, suppliers, etc.

If you want your child to be known as Milli, name her Milli.
