Anyone have experience with these names? Likes/dislikes?

You mention somewhere about giving them a choice. In every single case I can think of, they go by the diminutive their parents chose because it’s hard to get people to start calling you by another name, and, nine times out of ten, it doesn’t register when someone calls you by a different version of your name.

I concur. People with different/ varied faffing about names is the bane of my life so annoying. I assist clients with documents and the name has to be absolutely correct and consistent or the document fails.

If someone makes you a bank transfer and the name doesn't match it won't go through.

Also, if you name your child Millie short for Emilia, you have no say when you find that all her friends know her as Emmy when she's a teenager.

I have a long unusual name, and use a diminutive. I think it's very common at least in the UK, and have never experienced any issues with officialdom etc assuming that it was my actual name. Same with DH who has a common name and uses a common diminutive. Maybe it's different now because so many diminutives are used as actual names whereas my generation calling a child a diminutive as an actual name was virtually unheard off. But then I work with a bloke called Christopher and everyone calls him Sam so who knows.

Some names are more commonly the diminutive, therefore it’s obvious to check, such as Em ro Sam for a girl or Dan for a boy. Then you have diminutives that are names in their own right, such as Anna, Lisa, Sandra, Max, etc. My name has two diminutives that are both common as names on their own, so people never think to check.

Dan is a name in its own right. One of Jacob's sons.

It is but it’s less common and most people wouldn’t assume it’s just Dan. If someone had to make a bank transfer to Dan, they would most likely check it wasn’t short for Daniel. If they had to transfer money to Kate, they probably wouldn’t check if it was short for Katherine.

KirstenBlest · 27/03/2024 12:45

@PotatoPudding , it's not common but it is a name in its own right.
Kate could be short for Catherine (and other spellings), but I know a Kate who is really Katie.

That’s my point. Kate is short for Catherine but why bother naming a child one name when you have no intention of actually using it? It causes confusion because people don’t check if it’s short for something else.

OldBeyondMyYears · 27/03/2024 12:57

Aw nicknames for what exactly? These are actual names...🤷‍♀️

KirstenBlest · 27/03/2024 12:58

@PotatoPudding , I didn't Smile.

It's a fine line IMO. If you have no intention of ever using the full name, it seems pointless to put it on the BC (other than the MN 'to have choices') but some don't look like names.

The trend now other than on here is to put the day-to-day version on the BC (e.g. Alfie, Kit, Rosie)

I can think of adults who use both versions and some who only use the diminutive,
e.g. Christopher/Chris, Jonathan/Jon, Christina/Tina, Alexandra/Alex,
and some who are Tom, Tony, Mandy, Vicky or Beth on their BC

I'd probably be a bit surprised if Pete, Dave, Liz, or Becky weren't really Peter, David, Elizabeth, Victoria and Rebecca.

Mumofgirls2017 · 27/03/2024 13:20

They’re all ok if a bit overused but will be very fitting with peers. I’d probably choose Lily.
