Are Ruby and Chloe already dated?

Just wondering. I really like them, but I get the impression that they are getting less popular rather quickly. What's your personal impression?

About ten years ago (when I was pregnant) they were massively popular. So I tend to meet tween/teenagers called Ruby and Chloe now.

(I work with children).

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 24/03/2024 12:46

Yup, they’ve aged out again now.

SallyWD · 24/03/2024 12:58

I wouldn't say so. Yes they were more popular some years ago but they're still good names. They're not dated in the way name like Nigel, Roger, Shirley and Linda are.
I think they're lovely names and pretty timeless. I know Rubys and Shirleys of all ages - young and old

BoleynMemories13 · 24/03/2024 13:00

Still plenty of Rubys around in my experience. It may have peeked in the 2010s but it definitely doesn't feel 'dated' yet.

Chloe is still usable but does feel a bit more dated to me as it was so ridiculously popular in the 90s/00s. Chloe hasn't really been overly popular for the last 15 years or more. You certainly don't hear of too many under the age of 10.

Out of the two, I prefer Ruby. I've worked with a couple of really bitchy Chloes who put me off the name. I imagine it's quite popular among new parents these days, as Chloe has to be one of the top names for 20-30 somethings. So many of the mums at school seem to be Chloe, Sophie or Jess these days.

Moreteaandchocolate · 24/03/2024 13:09

I think that although they’ve passed their peak popularity, they’ve stood the test of time and don’t sound too dated to me - I think they’ll stay around in the top 100 for generations as “modern classics”. As someone else said, I don’t think they’re going to dive out of usage rarely to be used again, like some names do. I love both names and would happily call a child one of them.

B0G0F · 24/03/2024 13:14

Chloe was over-popular in the late 1990s so seems dated. Ruby's a popular name for a dog where I am.

tulipdoo · 24/03/2024 13:20

I know so many Chloe’s who are all around 22-25ish.

I think it’s a lovely name though

Roselilly36 · 24/03/2024 13:38

I like Chloe, not keen on Ruby.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 24/03/2024 13:47

My DD is 17 and has a friend the same age called Ruby. I don't think it's that popular now.

Lalupalina · 24/03/2024 14:08

Yes, both were over popular and have since fallen out of fashion and sound dated, especially Chloë

Lalupalina · 24/03/2024 14:09

They're not dated in the way name like Nigel, Roger, Shirley and Linda are.

Give it another 30 years Grin

GentleGentileschi · 24/03/2024 14:13

I think of Ruby of a dogs name, never met a human called Ruby (that I know of obviously).

Chloe yes very popular nineties name. Not a massive fan of the name, think it will be one of those names like Sharon/Kevin/Karen/Nigel that date pretty badly.

LauderSyme · 24/03/2024 14:17

I would say yes ever so slightly, but not enough to raise any eyebrows.

theduchessofspork · 24/03/2024 14:17

No I don’t think so, I meet a lot of teen Rubys and 20s and 30s Chloes, but they are frequently still used for babies

Chloe - no it won’t, it was never that popular and is a classic name used here for centuries. It’s still quite popular.

B0G0F · 24/03/2024 14:36

@theduchessofspork , Babies called Chloe in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com) says otherwise.

MallorcaNights · 24/03/2024 14:38

I think they are both lovely names, and not dated. I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a baby called Chloe or Ruby, like I would be if I met a baby called Tracey

Lalupalina · 24/03/2024 17:00

B0G0F · 24/03/2024 14:36

Wow, Chloe really fell of a cliff there! I agree that it feels dated, and not in a good way.

lokudwa · 24/03/2024 17:11

Chloe was a 90s name and Ruby late 00s-2010s.

Whoopsadaisy900 · 24/03/2024 17:40

I'm 30 next week and there were 4 Chloe's in my room, and after school I worked with a few two so it's definetly a 90's name I'd say. I really like Ruby I'd of used it for my 2 girls if OH had agreed.

I was at work the other day and there was a little girl about 1 named Amy and it was slightly odd to hear, Chloe, Amy, Megan, Danielle, Rachel they're all 90's names and to hear them now is a little strange to me. Megan seems to be coming back though so maybe Chloe is too, just hope my 90's name dosnt come back 😳

Whoopsadaisy900 · 24/03/2024 17:40

I meant year

Icehockeyflowers · 24/03/2024 17:44

Ruby is very popular around here - mostly 11+ age kids.
I absolutely hate the name tbh along with Lily, Sophie, and Ava.

Chloe is better. I only know one.

MallorcaNights · 24/03/2024 17:44

That’s true. I can’t imagine a baby Amy now. It was very common about 20 years ago @Whoopsadaisy900

ebts · 24/03/2024 17:45

My Chloe is in her mid-40s. It was relatively rare when we named her.
