Just looking to get some opinions on whether you prefer Imogen or Evangeline?

Imogen is one of my favourite ever names!

Evangeline might well get shortened to Evie, which is lovely but very overused.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 22/03/2024 09:05

Imogen.

TM1979 · 22/03/2024 09:06

Imogen

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 22/03/2024 09:13

I like Imogen, it's fairly unusual in my experience. I know of one Evangeline (adult) and she's known as Evie as pp said!
They are both nice names.

SpeculatingRooks · 22/03/2024 09:13

I love the name Evangeline

Quinoakeenwar · 22/03/2024 09:22

Should mention if Evangeline got shortened, it'd probably be to Eva or, when she's younger, Vivi.

I'm not sure if Imogen is too common?

Evangeline is lovely and would be my choice, it's easier to shorten too. Imogen is one of my least favorite names, always sounds lumpy to me and better suited to tummy medicine!

virginqueen · 22/03/2024 09:46

Imogen all the way. Its slightly more popular now than when I named mine, 33 years ago, but it hasn't been done to death. If you want a shortened version there's Immy or Imo.

Liv999 · 22/03/2024 09:51

Imogen is beautiful ❤️

SkaneTos · 22/03/2024 09:57

I voted for Imogen, but they are both beautiful names!

Lifeinlists · 22/03/2024 09:58

Imogen. Much more classic and stands the test of time.

But if you're going to call her Eva then why not just call her Eva? It's a nice name.

Itneverrainsinsocal · 22/03/2024 10:10

Definitely Evangeline. There was an Imogen in my primary school and on hearing it I just thought it was so strange! It sounds science-y and robotic to me - sounds like a shortened version of image-generator!!
(sorry maybe I’m just odd lol)
Evangeline sounds rich, feminine and strong to me.

MumChp · 22/03/2024 10:11

I prefer Imogen.
Evangeline is a (too) long (but nice) name.

Norugratsatall · 22/03/2024 10:14

Definitely Imogen!

Colinfromaccounts24 · 22/03/2024 10:15

Imogen but only because there is an Evangeline in DDs class and her mother is awful and very loud and if I hear 'EVANGELINE; in her booming voice one more time I may scream.

Meem321 · 22/03/2024 10:18

Imogen is actually a very classic name which features in Shakespeare's 'Cymbeline'. Not common. Perhaps more popular than it was in the 70's / 80's but still classic.

Evangeline is beautiful and one of my fave names, but as PPs have said, if you're going to shorten it anyway (as you appear to be considering, due to the planning of nicknames) then why bother with the full name anyway?

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 10:18

Imogen. Evangeline is too long and you don't really have much control over diminutives once they reach school age. Vivi is a bit of a stretch and Evie is highly likely.

Houselamp · 22/03/2024 10:27

Imogen is lovely
I went to primary school with an Evangeline, she got tired of people calling her Evan (her parents called her Evan) and asked to go by Angel. It didn't stick and she was called Vange instead poor girl.

I'm afraid I think similarly about Imogen. Sounds like a power station, or engine oil or something. I find it very ugly and harsh sounding

Evangeline is very pretty, if a little flowery.

TheMurderousGoose · 22/03/2024 12:35

Imogen.

Evangeline is too zealously Christian for me.

DontGiveADuck · 22/03/2024 12:38

Evangeline is nice but there are sooooo many Evies and Eva’s and Avas they’ve all
been done to death. You can’t guarantee at school she won’t just become another Evie.

Not keen on Imogen, when my DS was a baby ten years ago it felt like Imogen was the ‘in’ name.

IggyAce · 22/03/2024 12:40

We had this issue as both of those names were in the running for dds first name in the end we waited until she was born. We have an Imogen Evangeline.

smooshraspberry · 22/03/2024 12:44

Evangeline was a front runner for me, but was put off by the majority of people mispronouncing it!

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 13:02

@smooshraspberry , how do they say it? How do you say it?

LenaLamont · 22/03/2024 13:06

Evangeline makes me think of the Princess and the Frog - my kids went through a phase of shouting “EVANGELINE!” at stars when they were into that film.

I did know a Vannie who was actually Evangeline; not the nicest short form of a name.

Imogen is lovely.
