Just looking to get some opinions on whether you prefer Imogen or Evangeline?

Imogen, love this and the nicknames.
Evangeline will just become yet another ‘Eve’ themed name, even if Eva she’ll still be with all the Evie’s. Saying that I love Vivi as a nickname I’d you can make that stick!

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 22/03/2024 13:33

I love Evangeline but would be put off by the ubiquity of Evie type names.

Imogen is just as beautiful but more unusual.

TheOriginalEmu · 22/03/2024 13:54

I choose Imogen as I slightly prefer it, but both are lovely! My only slight issue with Evangeline is it’s very long for a little person to learn to spell/say. But that wouldn’t stop me using it.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 14:00

I have a long name and it wasn't an issue, but if it had been shortened, I might have struggled. I'd have learnt Eva if that's what everyone used.
An acquaintance has a daughter with a long name always used in full and she didn't struggle.

I know a Max and a Chris and they struggled with the longer versions. Might be relevant that one of them is dyslexic.

I had a ballet teacher when I was little called Miss Imogen. She was perfect in every way - as a young adult I nannied for a family with a little girl named Imogen and she was honestly the most beautiful little girl inside and out. The kindest little face and such a gentle little thing. Imogen is a beautiful name.

Love Evangeline - Eva is a gorgeous shortening. I think MN makes far too big a deal out of it allegedly being ‘so overused’. I have a teenage one, she adores her name and has only ever met 2 other Evas in her whole life. Ava/Evie/Eve seem to be far more common. It’s not a bad thing - just a sign of a great name!

Not a fan of Imogen, it sounds very clunky and harsh to me

Honeybeebuzz · 22/03/2024 19:08

Imogen

Evangeline sounds overtly religious

ParadiseLaundry · 22/03/2024 19:27

Evangeline. Always been one of my favourite girls names.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/03/2024 19:37

Well I'm sat watching the amazing Green fried tomatoes at The whistle Stop Care so Imogen. Mind you there's also a character called Evelyn. However Imogen is very whimsical edgy but elegant.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 22/03/2024 19:38

I have a toddler Imogen- gets called Immy … love it and only know one other Imogen so I don’t think common

Evangeline is gorgeous but I think after they start school you don’t get to control the nickname so she might be Evie so as long as you are ok with that both are gorgeous names

ButtockUp · 22/03/2024 19:41

Imogen needs a renaissance. Definitely.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 13:02

@smooshraspberry , how do they say it? How do you say it?

I have no idea how to write down the correct pronunciation to communicate it... I just know that people saying E-van-ge-line would drive me potty (with en emphasis on van)

Barleysugar86 · 22/03/2024 20:20

Evangaline is a bit much and sounds like you are trying too hard. Imogen is lovely, and I love Immy as a nickname.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 20:20

I've only ever heard it said as y-VAN-juh-leen, stress on the VAN.

I love both. If you end up going for Evangeline, check out the song The Mother by Brandy Carlisle as it's about having a daughter called Evangeline. Really sweet.

LadyBird1973 · 22/03/2024 20:44

Evangeline is less common than Imogen imo - my dd had 2 Imogen's in her class at primary school.
All names are prone to being abbreviated or turned into a nickname and as much as you try, you won't be able to control how that plays out with other children. So my advice is to pick the name you love the most.

I know everyone says about Evangeline becoming an Evie, but sometimes kids like to opt into having a simpler non stand out name at school, but it's good to have a pretty and unusual one once they get past that teenage desire to fit in with everybody else. So it's not necessarily a bad thing if a name has a fairly common abbreviation.

Baaaaaa · 22/03/2024 20:51

Immy, Eva and Evey/Evee are all very sweet. I don't like any of them in their full state. Sorry.

RichPetunia · 22/03/2024 20:52

Can't decide as both are lovely ❤️

theduchessofspork · 22/03/2024 21:00

Imogen

Evangeline will end up yet another Eve/Evie and there are already 3 million of them
