Classic girl names we haven't thought of?!

MKWarrier · 20/03/2024 07:34

I've posted a few times on here about our name options so far but unfortunately we're still nowhere. We have a current list of 4 names, two of which I like better and, of course, DH prefers the other two. The names are Alice, Isabel, Lara and Jessica. But as neither of us really likes the other's options we probably need to start again.

We like classic names that have no pronunciation issues, and DH has a "no nature names" rule. We feel like we must have thought of every name that falls into this category - please help us find some that we're missing!

Names I like that DH doesn't: Anna, Rosa, Harriet, Elizabeth, Iris, Emma, Charlotte

Names DH likes: Ava / Evie, Alexandra, Alicia, Chloe

Middle name is already decided after a family member and baby's sister is Matilda.

Thank you!

Not another 2024 born Ottilie 🥱

I thought Ottilie was unusual! I really dislike popular/common names but it's 18 years since I named my ds.

It’s very much the name of the moment, not unusual at all anymore!

Okay. My ds has a well known but less popular/less common name. We can't have any more children but we have an unusual girls name we would have chosen. If i was naming a child now i would look at lists of unpopular names.

I like names with a meaning or an inspiration

Mary / Marie - lots of women, including the only one to win 2 nobel prizes
Ada - first computer programmer
Valentina - first woman in space
Grace - Hopper or Darling - both strong women
Charity - look up the US 8666 postal regiment
Meriel - quite a few and it isn't widely used.
Elsbeth - again quite a few but it is similar to Elizabeth

Wow, thank you all so much for these suggestions! So many beautiful names on here that I love but DH has already vetoed sadly. A few new ideas to run past him though!

The mentions of Abigail are interesting - it's actually the fifth name on our list, but as it isn't in either of our top two I hadn't really considered it a serious contender. Will ask DH about it again tonight though - perhaps it's a good compromise option. I go back and forth on it (love it when not pregnant, less keen when I am for some reason) and surname begins with B so worried Abby B...... might be a bit B heavy! Annoyingly it goes really well with DH's surname, but as we used mine for DD1 we are stuck with it for DD2 as well.

We like Francesca and Felicity but not the short versions so don't want to risk using the names.

@sashh I love names with inspiration / meanings too, or literary connections. One of the reasons I loved Matilda.

Also agree that the names on your list are particularly classic (victoria/catherine ect.) just popular names thats fell out of fashion but not particularly "bad"

(Also Clara could be another option?)

@NoSnowdrop I don't have a particular preference for nature names, but some of the names I like just as names also happen to have nature links - Rosa, Iris, Flora etc, but DH vetoes them because of the nature connection.

Throwing some out there.

Sylvie/Sylvia - means from the forest but not obviously nature connected
Estelle/Stella - star and a Swedish princess
Vivienne - life
Genevieve - saint who defended Paris
Gabrielle - similar sound to Abigail
