Evening all,

What do you think of the name Seren for a girl? I know it's Welsh meaning Star. It has a lovely meaning for a wished/longed for child.
Would you say it travels well across UK and across say Europe (Spain, Greece etc)? Any one had any issues with people mispronouncing/not knowing name?

Thank you 🙂

No it doesn't, @TheOriginalEmu . It's a Welsh name now. It's very popular. It's trendy.

Yea it’s popular now. So are names like Eloise and Iris. Names come back around. Even in Wales 🙄
it is an old name. Why you seem to want to argue that point I don’t know.

It's nice enough but I don't really like nouns as names and Seren is often mispronounced.

KirstenBlest · 20/03/2024 12:33

Me neither, especially modern ones like Seren, Rhosyn and Enfys.

I have relatives with the name Seren in my family tree too if I remember rightly about the 1820’s was the oldest. I haven’t gone further back yet so it’s likely I’ll find out older relatives with the name Seren. I would class Seren as an old Welsh name.

I have several friends with children called Seren so where I am it’s a bit over done but I like the name.

Not keen on it. It seems a bit modern and it's popular, but I can't see the appeal.
Would you name a child Star?
There's also the Seren vs Serrun pronunciation issue.

If you like it use it but I wouldn't.

There are children called Star…. and Celeste and Stella and Nova. I can think of worse names.

Seren is a beautiful name. It was quite popular in Wales in the early 1900’s. Then faded out, somewhat, but I know a few older ladies who have Seren as their middle name (my daughter in laws mother being one) - usually named after their mother/grandmother. It’s become very popular again now. My Grandaughters middle name is Seren, named after her mother and grandmother.

Total name crush :)

I'm in the US so I only recently heard this name but I adore it

Margo2023 · 27/07/2024 00:48

@KirstenBlest calm down now, it's not like your own name is from some far out tribe

I quite like it, but I agree on the pronunciation being an issue.

Do you live in Wales? It really isn’t trendy here! It’s classic and a bit posh!

I do! Very Welsh part. It’s not uncommon where I am by any means but it’s certainly not a new or trendy name. On a par with Angharad, Rhiannon, Gwenllian.

Underlig · 28/07/2024 05:51

I think it’s a bit naff, really. Like Luna, Nova, etc. The Dawn of today. It’s generally not pronounced correctly as well.

Meadowwild · 28/07/2024 05:53

I love it.
