Evening all,

What do you think of the name Seren for a girl? I know it's Welsh meaning Star. It has a lovely meaning for a wished/longed for child.
Would you say it travels well across UK and across say Europe (Spain, Greece etc)? Any one had any issues with people mispronouncing/not knowing name?

Thank you 🙂

Lovely but prefer it spelt serren

What the actual fuck is that?

that’s like saying you prefer Sarah spelled Sarrah, or Elizabeth spelled Elizzabeth. Utterly idiotic.

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 22:43

@OneMoreTime23 , I suppose you dislike Rivver too.

Overthebow · 18/03/2024 22:46

I’m not sure how it’s pronounced, I would assume se-ren or se-run? I’m in the south east and it’s not common here.

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 23:01

@Overthebow , as a Welsh word meaning Star, Serr-ehn.
or SEHrehn

ILoveSalmonSpread · 18/03/2024 23:02

It might seem timeless but you're not alone in choosing it. There's a few.

YourWinter · 18/03/2024 23:04

Gorgeous name.

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 23:11

I think it's timeless in the same way as River is (might have been used but not by many). I'm not keen on noun names so see them as trendy and likely to date badly.

It' s getting a positive response on here.

TerriPie · 19/03/2024 00:22

Lovely name but sounds too like Sarin to me.

Berlinlover · 19/03/2024 00:24

I’ve never heard of it before but it’s beautiful.

peaceinourtime · 19/03/2024 02:22

Is a beautiful name

DrJump · 19/03/2024 02:27

It was on my short list.

LauderSyme · 19/03/2024 02:27

Seren is a beautiful name.

LauderSyme · 19/03/2024 02:33

I think it would travel fairly well across Europe and beyond. Different nationalities might sound it slightly differently and put the emphasis on different syllables, but that wouldn't matter as it's lovely however pronounced.

TheOriginalEmu · 19/03/2024 04:14

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 21:50

It’s a very old welsh name.
Yeah, right.

What do you mean, yeah right? It was my great- grandmothers sister’s name. She was born in the 1860s.

KirstenBlest · 18/03/2024 22:43

@OneMoreTime23 , I suppose you dislike Rivver too.

That would be great for something like a drill
manufacturer. Not a baby.

user1492757084 · 19/03/2024 09:08

I prefer ..

Sabine
Serena
Sarah

Seren Dipity

@TheOriginalEmu One person being named something in the 1860s doesn't make it an 'old Welsh name'.

@TheOriginalEmu One person being named something in the 1860s doesn't make it an 'old Welsh name'.

It kind of does though, there was no baby name books in rural Wales in the 1800s, so names were often familial so chances are it was passed down through the family. The fact people were called it means it was a name. Lots of older welsh girls names are nature related.

KirstenBlest · 19/03/2024 12:04

No it doesn't, @TheOriginalEmu . It's a Welsh name now. It's very popular. It's trendy.

Katiesaidthat · 19/03/2024 12:24

From Spain, and answering your question, I can tell you it sounds fine, doesn´t mean anything unfortunate. I would´ve assumed in my innocence it was something to do with Serena. I would pronounce it Seh-rehn, with the stress on the first syllable.

diddleysquat1982 · 19/03/2024 14:09

What an incredibly lovely thread full of positive responses from you all (apart from the Rivver ones - definitely no additional letters here!).
Never had such a great response to a name - it's definitely sat as the top contender now. Fits with everything I am looking for.
Thank you everyone.

Rivver was in response to a suggestion of the rather dreadful Serren.
I'm not suggesting that anyone names a child Rivver.

I'm sure that baby diddleysquat will be a little ⭐

RuthW · 19/03/2024 18:28

Lovely

Caravaggiouch · 19/03/2024 18:31

I like it and it was on our shortlist (we’re English but Welsh family background) but doesn’t really go with our surname.

Lightbulbspark · 20/03/2024 07:57

I prefer the sound of Serena but appreciate that may change the connection with Wales? I love Stella too, for the meaning. Celeste too, come to think of it.
