Spanish/Greek Inspired Girls Names

Whittled down to two.....
Sofia and Lucia (pronounced Loo-see-ah)
What do you think?

Love Spanish and Greek inspired names - with the sunshine/warmth/mediterrean feel. Love holidaying in both places and would love a holiday home in either destination at some point in the future.
Names have to be short, my boys name is top 5, 4 letters and doesn't get shortened. I know nicknames are inevitable but I prefer names far less likely to be shortened.
Do also like Olympia and Athena but think they might be a bit out there.

I have an Inés, and her name is 100% mispronounced by all; she now answers to anything remotely close.

Could you explain how you pronounce it and how others do please? :-)

mathanxiety · 27/03/2024 03:56

Lucia will be mispronounced.

Sofia is nice.

Lucia should be pronounced loo-thee-ah in standard Spanish, not loo-see-ah.

Inès is beautiful...

Alejandra?

Alicia Al-ith-ia
Rosa
Larissa or Larisa

Lucia will be mispronounced. Probably 'Lew-chee-ah' often...I'd avoid for that reason.

WaitingfortheTardis · 27/03/2024 05:45

I had a friend called Lucia, hers was pronounced Lou chee ah. I think there are a lot of variations so that could get annoying. Sofia is pretty. Other names of poeple I used to know in Greece, Ariadne, Athena, Artemis, Maria, Monica, Cristina, Stefania. Spanish ones I remember are, Ines, Paula (Powla), Laura (Lowra), Maria (popular in both), Elena, Andrea.

All lovely names, OP.

Have you considered Elena? I know four women called Elena, one Greek, one Spanish, one English and one Russian.

Anonymous02468 · 27/03/2024 11:17

@MissScarletInTheBallroom I've never been sure how to pronounce Elena.... Is it Eh-Lay-na, El-en-ah? That's what puts me off.

I think it can be either. I've heard it both ways. I think it sounds nice either way and the pronunciations aren't very different, but if you're bothered by that then maybe it's not the right choice for you.

@MissScarletInTheBallroom Thank you - girls names are impossible. My son would have been Matilda if he was a girl but I don't like the short versions of it and I know a few people with Matilda's now. I like short names that cannot easily be shortened. I have links to Spain and Greece and love anything that makes you think sand and sun. My son has biblical name but a lot of biblical girls names are people I grew up with so a lot of negative associations. It's IMPOSSIBLE!

If you liked longer names I would suggest Penelope, which works well in both Greece and Spain.

What about Diana?

Anonymous02468 · 27/03/2024 11:58

@MissScarletInTheBallroom Diana not really style I'm going for. Boys names are N O A H and J A C O B.

Chloe is technically a Biblical name, of Greek origin and currently popular in Spain as well as most of the rest of Europe.

YouveGotAFastCar · 27/03/2024 12:11

I wouldn't do Sofia because it's super popular; and everyone will spell it wrong.

Lucia is cute, but will you go for the English or Spanish pronunciation? The English one is probably preferable so she doesn't spend her life correcting people.

Ines is gorgeous. I love the Penelope suggestion.

Anonymous02468 · 27/03/2024 12:30

@MissScarletInTheBallroom Chloe feels very 90s to me. I'm just not sure about it. I think the one that I currently like best is probably Sofia (this spelling), just because the popularity matches the siblings and it's not too out there. But not 100% sure. I do like Athena - warrior, as she is a warrior but is it too out there compared to siblings?

mathanxiety · 27/03/2024 15:20

I think Lidia / Lydia would go with your boys' names.
