Is Linda due a comeback?

My aunt is called Linda (nn Linny) and I just love it. It kind of fits with the trend for old fashioned names but is it not old fashioned enough yet?

Tbh I haven't checked it's position on the baby names ranking...I've never heard of a baby Linda/Linny though. Yep, there were only 18 baby Lindas in 2020 so not popular!

I think Linda is a pretty name in it's own right, light and airy. I also know an Angela and initially it sounded funny, now I think of Angel/a, again, it's a pretty name.

Much better than Doris or Violet or IMO in that they are pretty sounding names. I wouldn't worry if they sound 'old-fashioned' as everything sounds old fashioned to older people and the younger ones won't care. They won't even remember the glamorous Linda Evans off Dallas!

ItsallIeverwanted · 07/03/2024 10:34

Plus Linny is a pretty short name, so Linda (Linny) seems nice to me.

Thedance · 07/03/2024 10:35

Fashion is odd. The names that are popular now would have been seen as very old fashioned when I was young. Names that were popular when I was young like Linda, Susan and Tracy are seen as old fashioned now as do names from just children's generation.
I think to be fashionable names have to skip a few generations so names fashionable now are names that were popular in their great, or great grandparents time.

ScierraDoll · 07/03/2024 10:36

It's a lovely name.
A proper name
Go for it

Teddleshon · 07/03/2024 10:38

I think it will be back. Like Tracy it was originally seen as incredibly chic! Nancy Mitford’s heroine was Linda and Tracy Lord from High Society.

peachescariad · 07/03/2024 10:41

Personally I hope not - to me it's right up there there with my past 1970s classmate generation of Michelle, Beverley, Angela, Debbie, Julie and Tracey.

IamaRevenant · 07/03/2024 10:41

I like it! Possibly due to having lived in Portugal for a few years as a teen where 'linda' means 'beautiful' so that's the first thing I associate it with 😁 . I also do just think it's nice sounding as a name in its own right, unlike some more old fashioned names that have had a resurgence in recent years.

NoelJo · 07/03/2024 12:07

I think it’s a pretty name in the same way I think Pamela or Angela are pretty names but I would not use it for a baby. It’s definitely too soon and I associate it with 60+ year olds.

DrearyLane · 07/03/2024 12:12

Another 15-20 years, I reckon, when the baby boomers’ grandchildren are having their own children.

(on the basis that Arthur/Mabel/Evelyn/Jack were old people names when my generation were at primary school and now we can’t move for them)

MaloneMeadow · 07/03/2024 15:36

No! Old fashioned classic names are coming back. Linda is certainly not classic, it just screams 70s!

pilates · 07/03/2024 15:47

I hope not

AdaColeman · 07/03/2024 16:28

I quite like Linda, but at the moment it is an old fashioned name rather than a Granny Chic name, though I really like Belinda and Melinda.
Also, with a similar vibe is Lucinda which I think is a beautiful name.

Readytoevolve · 07/03/2024 16:46

I know too many. I always think it’s such a boring name. It shouldn’t come back

crostini · 07/03/2024 16:47

YES!
I also like Debbie

MaloneMeadow · 07/03/2024 16:48

crostini · 07/03/2024 16:47

YES!
I also like Debbie

😳 Please no!!

HanaJane · 07/03/2024 17:02

If you like it then go for it, I actually think it's pretty the more I say it! You could also go for Belinda with Linda for short then there's always the option to go for Belle as a nickname if DD prefers when she's older

theduchessofspork · 08/03/2024 09:33

I think perhaps because it carried on being popular into the 60s so a bit early to revive

You could be in the vanguard though, it does fit with all the Lola/luna/Leila/lena/lara/lyra names - that would put me off a bit though, there are so many of them

Perhaps Melinda or Belinda or something like Rosalyn or Aislinn and use it as a nick name

PennyPugwash · 08/03/2024 09:51

Sorry I think it's awful

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/03/2024 22:28

Yep, in another 20 years or so when there are more Great- Grandma Linda’s about, expect to see a big comeback imo - particularly as it has a pretty sound. Angela, Patricia, Gillian and Susan will likely return at the same time as they have pretty sounds or a variety of nn’s too. Deborah and Pamela as well- although not with the nn’s Deb/Debbie or Pam/Pammy (but maybe I’m wrong and they will be retro/hipster cool - like Barbara with nn Babs 🤣).

Bbq1 · 08/03/2024 23:11

Not quite time for a comeback. Lyn just makes me thin of a middle aged woman - i know many. Having said that if you like the name go for it.

Cleaningupthemess · 08/03/2024 23:21

I’m over 60 and know many Lindas. It just seems such a dull name, even though the ones I know are anything but dull. I don’t think it’s time for a comeback. At the moment it’s not the ‘right’ sort of old lady name imo.

Dovewings · 08/03/2024 23:27

I'm 64 and many of my school friends were Lindas. Very common name and nobody said it was a lovely name, sorry. Try to imagine how her name will fit when she is 40, not just as a little girl.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 08/03/2024 23:28

I would like to point out that on most of the Spanish speaking world Linda can mean beautiful but more often is a bit more bland and would better be translated as nice or pretty.
Bonita is probably closer

Dovewings · 08/03/2024 23:32

Lyndsey is nicer than Linda and more of that time.

shillyshallysholly · 08/03/2024 23:34

I met a baby Linda just last week and thought that it was a brilliant and very cool name!! Also my beloved aunt's name, though this wasn't the first thing that popped into my mind.
