Don't mind the sound, but don't like the associations?

Any names where you like how the name sounds, but wouldn't use it because of associations(both personal ones and famous people/characters)?

I loved the name Crystal but so many say it just sounds like a stripper name and chavvy. I don't hear it that way but accepted I was the minority.

Also really loved Elmo, Nemo, Woody. Wouldn't use the first two for the cartoon characters and the third not because of the cartoon character but because it means erection.

And I liked a lot of names that had been used for car names. Clio, Astra, Octavia, Nova etc

And woody is woody Alan 🤢

Yes to car names, which is a real shame

My mum's slavic and I did like the boy's name Milan (pronounced 'MEE-lahn') but the problem was everyone would assume it's 'Milan' like the Italian city and even though that sounds nice in itself, it would also seem like a 'Trying to be classy but sounding naff' sort of name.

Well no one’s going to say if!

My generation do (30s). Clearly still traumatised from it!

Oh believe me, school staff would definitely say it to each other if it occurred to them - and in my year the staff ages range from 20s to mid 50s, so from people who would have been at primary school at the time to people who had young children at the time.

I avoided madeleine when naming our dds because of the madeleine mccann connection. However only because our surname also starts 'Mc'. Otherwise it wouldn't have bothered me. (And I'm 43 if that maters.)

I don’t understand Charlotte or Verity on this list. What connotations do they have?

Well the OP did say personal associations so I guess those posters have had the name spoiled by an unpleasant individual.

Ask any teacher how hard it is to name a child without thinking of the ones they've met and never want to see ever again

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 31/03/2024 23:44

I agree with Iago, especially as it's still a set text for many secondary schools. Cracking name though.

I also came on to say Myra. Very pretty name but still too notorious for me.

I like the sound of the name Julia but a Julia was Top Bitch at my school so it was an absolute no. Jessica was her second in command of Team Bully so also a no.

Any virtue name like Serena, Patience, Prudence etc. And describing names like Bianca or Rufus. I always think "what if they aren't?" When a hear a baby with one of those names.
Also months or days used as names when the child wasn't born at those times, like April.

I know a Joy who is anything but joyful. It makes the name sound really sarcastic!

Amelia. Gorgeous sound, but means missing limbs.

My worst name ever, due to the sound. The revolting "mealy' noise in the middle. 🤮 The absence of limbs definition is just dreadful too. I am always in disbelief that a doctor would choose it for her daughter. (Emily Andre.)

I heard a toddler being called Myra last year and it really took me aback even after all these years and the incidents being way before my time. I don't think that one will ever make a UK comeback.

In this case mum wasn't British born/raised going on her accent so may not have known about the association and I don't know how it was spelt.

I really like to think someone would tell me if I was abroad. This is why asking on MN is advisable at the very least. Of course you could hate a name you previously loved too

PaintedEgg · 01/04/2024 19:40

Sorry if it's a silly question, but is it because of moors murders? it took me way too long to think of a negative association and thats the only one google suggested

But why ? Madeleine was an innocent 3 year old who basically vanished. Absolutely nothing about this child to be ashamed of . Could understand if the name was Myra !

I agree nothing to be ashamed of. Just a sad association and I guess I was also sort of superstitious....like tempting fate. Obviously just my opinion. Madeleine is a lovely name.

orangeafter · 01/04/2024 20:00

Heidi (there's a chain of cafes near me called this)

Phoebe - it reminds me of Friends

Huskyfat · 02/04/2024 08:29

Margot - people read it as maggot a lot
Amelia - missing limbs

Yes, that's very strong association for a lot of people

PaintedEgg · 02/04/2024 08:54

@Shitlord makes sense, but it's odd commenting on parents' choice in this case given how many Ians is walking about

Isn't it plainly obvious that Myra being quite an unusual name to start with, coupled with the horror of the crimes is what makes it so off-putting whereas Ian must be one of the most common British names (as a variant of John/Sean etc) which dilutes the association hugely?

Some mention Madeleine as a sad association. Not Holly, Jessica (used separately) or James. Why? Because it is a more distinctive name.
