Don't mind the sound, but don't like the associations?

Any names where you like how the name sounds, but wouldn't use it because of associations(both personal ones and famous people/characters)?

Hermione - Harry Potter
Ariana - grande
Ophelia - too tragic

Agree with this. It sounds lovely but I always think it looks like a retired couple's bungalow name.
I like the name Matthew but don't like how Matt makes me think of a doormat or knots on a Persian cat.

Yes. Along with Bide-a-wee and Dun Roamin.

Or those names in developments from decades past where roads were named after the builders’ children, or the builder and his wife. There was a Linwal Drive in a village I used to live in, after Walter the builder and Linda his wife.

That's funny, I hadn't realised whole roads were named after the twee combined names!!

Diana. Nothing against the princess (or the Paul Anka song) but the posthumous Diana fandom is just too embarrassing.

Longdarkcloud · 30/03/2024 22:28

Sergei really rolls off the tongue ….but
Cressida
Cordelia
Leander

Yes, I had a friend in Bexleyheath who lived near a road called (I had to look this up) Ethronvi Road — developer called it after his children Ethel, Ronald and Violet.

Ira

Any virtue name like Serena, Patience, Prudence etc. And describing names like Bianca or Rufus. I always think "what if they aren't?" When a hear a baby with one of those names.
Also months or days used as names when the child wasn't born at those times, like April.

Shitlord · 31/03/2024 11:36

Amelia, Alexia (acquired inability to read), Chardonnay is beautiful

Ivorymoon · 31/03/2024 21:28

Flora and Alexa.

MonsterMunched · 31/03/2024 21:34

Amelia for reasons mentioned above.
Isabel- necessary on a bike.
Anything associated with one person- eg maggie, Myra, Ariana, kylie.
Jacob (deceiver)

Aryan. It's a beautiful Indian name but... yeah. I know a few parents who have named their child it but they have no idea of the connotations.

Yeah, I’ve got a friend called Hardik who moved to the UK as a child, years after his non-English speaking parents named him. Good job he’s got a great sense of humour. But it’s a name where he introduces himself and goes “Yes, I know…”

We can never be sure the names we pick don’t mean something rude or negative in many other languages. Even after googling extensively.

Theres a Summer and Winter twin pairing in my niece’s class. Born in Autumn.

I feel like this about Ophelia given the Shakespeare character of course. But v popular so clearly most don’t care about her being a tragic figure and victim.

Yodel294 · 31/03/2024 21:43

I knew a woman named Isis - named after the goddess of healing and magic. Lovely associations until .... well, I believe she's now changed it to something else.

User373433 · 31/03/2024 22:02

I loved the name Crystal but so many say it just sounds like a stripper name and chavvy. I don't hear it that way but accepted I was the minority.

Also really loved Elmo, Nemo, Woody. Wouldn't use the first two for the cartoon characters and the third not because of the cartoon character but because it means erection.

And I liked a lot of names that had been used for car names. Clio, Astra, Octavia, Nova etc

VesperLind · 31/03/2024 22:08

Love Sharon, but…

Angelina
Madonna

I plan to use Madonna

Cavewomansue · 31/03/2024 22:21

I don’t understand Charlotte or Verity on this list. What connotations do they have?

LauderSyme · 31/03/2024 22:23

Lots of these resonate with me. Plus

Iago. Such a cool name but a horrible character.

Augustus. LOVE it but brings obese boys and Roman tyrants to mind.

Amaranth. Also love it but pretentious.

Sybil. Pretty but still can't shake that Fawlty Towers vibe.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/03/2024 22:24

Charlie
claudia - means lame
also like the sound of Sharon, but…

I can't believe people are still saying they think McCann when they hear the name Madeline/Maddie/Maddy, although I think maybe it's just a Mumsnet thing.

We've have one in the year group I work in, we had one last year, and probably most other years in the past - I've never heard anyone in real life say they think of Madeline McCann when they hear it.

I’ve also found this really odd. It just makes it sound like the name is meaningless and the parents are a bit thick (I think because it’s so obviously not true?) something with a more hidden meaning like rudy/red doenst seem as strange.

Well no one’s going to say if!

My generation do (30s). Clearly still traumatised from it!
