I go back and forth on this. I love it and want to use it, then I lose interest.

OP asked for opinions and this is mine so not sure why this has seemingly bothered you so much. 🤨

When we chose our DC’s names, we went for ones that suited both children and adults. Everyone is entitled to their own methods of choosing names.

It didn't bother me at all 🤨

Timeless and international, easy to spell and pronounce which is why I picked it for DD (at first thought that is, I have since realised that Brits pronounce it differently from Finns which means half my family pronounce DD's name wrong!)

I like Maria. And as we keep being told "the older names are coming back". But it won't be as common as all of the other names.

Sorry but it's a bit dull. Mariella is nicer IMO

Puke.

Westwindworries · 19/02/2024 15:01

I know a small Maria, whose Muslim parents picked it because it works in both their language and English.

SplodgeOfCustard · 19/02/2024 15:12

I think it's a beautiful name.

LBFseBrom · 19/02/2024 15:30

I think it's a beautiful name and always have. It's timeless and classic.

lostwithoutpronouns · 19/02/2024 15:40

Mary, Marie, Mariah are also nice options

BoleynMemories13 · 19/02/2024 16:53

I would assume you're Catholic tbh. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just something to consider if you're not religious.

The only children I know with this name are from Spanish or Romanian backgrounds (obviously you don't state your own background but I'm just pointing out my own personal experience of the name these days). Although it's in the top 100 in England and Wales, I often assume this to be because of it's International appeal (ie it's a name which can reflect a child's heritage whilst still being very recognisable and easy to spell/pronounce in Britain). It doesn't seem very popular at all among native Brits these days.

No one can solve a problem like Maria…

Works really well internationally

FayCarew · 19/02/2024 17:16

I like it

elp30 · 19/02/2024 18:47

I'm Hispanic and my mother and all of her five sisters/ my aunts are all named Maria and a second name. Strangely, my mother wasn't the oldest but was the only one who was known solely as Maria or Mary without her second name of Elena.

As for my opinion of the name, I love it. I find it very beautiful and a classic name. I'm also partial to Mary.

MillshakePickle · 19/02/2024 18:49

I know a 4 Yr old Maria and a new baby Maria. I think it's a very sweet name both girls suit the name beautifully.

Marianna, Marianne feel far too American

TheWildWest · 19/02/2024 18:50

Pia is also pretty.

fightingthedogforadonut · 19/02/2024 18:52

I prefer Marianne or Mary tbh

ChanelNo19EDT · 19/02/2024 18:53

I like it. I also prefer Marielle and Marianne, but nothing wrong with Maria.

Grazyna80 · 19/02/2024 19:02

My name is Maria, it’s alright, but people keep singing at me all the time.

Odile13 · 19/02/2024 19:03

I like it, simple and pretty.

AdriftAbroad1 · 19/02/2024 19:08

Every single Spanish woman over about 55 is called Maria something.

ie Maria ... Carmen (and they go by Carmen)

The make equivalent is Jose .... Luis whatever. etc.

I do not like it. Dated and overused.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/02/2024 20:55

I really like it. Quite unusual these days.

daylightdreamer · 20/02/2024 00:04

I'm a Maria, specifically one named after West Side Story. I don't mind the name but an awful lot of people sing sound of music or Blondie at me. Also the sheer volume of people who reply to my work emails with "dear Marie" or phone calls go like this; "what's your name?" "Maria." blah blah blah "well thanks very much Marie!" It infuriates me every time

honeyfox · 20/02/2024 00:14

Happened to my mum too, Maria but lots called her Marie and she went by both.

I have a similar derivative name and it's constantly misspelled as well. A bit annoying.

Still think Maria is a lovely name and not overused these days.

Sounds as if you're very unsure, regardless of opinions on here (which really don't matter if you like the name).
