Anna or Lucy

I love both of these very much but can't decide which I prefer.

If you had two favourite names did you use both on your baby or save one hoping to use it later?

Lucy

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 17/02/2024 10:26

I loved both of these, they were on a list of three names and we've gone with the other one but it was close! I think out of the two of them we'd have gone with Lucy.

Brokengutter · 17/02/2024 10:28

I prefer Anna :) strong and glamorous. However, as a child I wanted to be called Lucy! Now as an adult it sounds too childish to my ears and I'd rather be Anna.

midgetastic · 17/02/2024 10:32

Wait till baby is born as sometimes it becomes clear then

HyacinthBoucket · 17/02/2024 10:32

Lucy is sweet and youthful, Anna is sophisticated with womanly grace.

Both international, easy to say and spell. If you're really 50-50 roll a dice or let your partner decide.

LadyEloise1 · 17/02/2024 10:33

I prefer Anna.

TenThousandSpoons · 17/02/2024 10:34

Both are lovely. If you think you’ll have another child I wouldn’t use both on your first baby as they make a great pairing for sisters.

Ketzele · 17/02/2024 10:36

Both are nice, but Anna is lovely.

HyacinthBoucket · 17/02/2024 10:36

I would be tempted to save one for later.

Lucy and Anna are classic sister names. In my mind, Lucy is a blonde and Anna is a brunette.

SallyWD · 17/02/2024 10:40

I love them both but prefer Anna. To me, Lucy is a bit more pretty, a bit of a soft, girly name like Sophie. I prefer Anna because to me it sounds stronger.

3peassuit · 17/02/2024 10:43

I prefer Anna, Lucy sounds a bit twee.

Onelife2024 · 17/02/2024 10:45

I have a Lucy, so I vote Lucy! I think it’s a gorgeous name that’s soft and pretty, but also timeless and suits all ages. I also had Anna on my list, and I still love that name, so I totally get your dilemma! I never ended up using Anna, but might well do so if I had a third girl.

Hummusandstuff · 17/02/2024 10:50

Both lovely. Anna for the win.

Moveoverdarlin · 17/02/2024 10:51

I love Lucy. All the Anna’s I know are in their 50s so that puts me off a little bit.

ToastyToes101 · 17/02/2024 11:42

I think this is the first time I've read one of these threads and genuinely liked both names! Usually it's "which is nicer, Sophia or Mildred" and you get loads of people saying how much they love Mildred, so unique etc...

Anyway, Lucy and Anna are both lovely, classic and unlikely to go out of fashion. I also like the spelling Lucie.

MaloneMeadow · 17/02/2024 12:42

Anna 100% - a lovely timeless classic

Really not a fan of Lucy - I just find it so boring and meh, probably because of how popular it is. Seems quite dated to the early 00s, DD is 19 and knows countless Lucys

Firsttimebabymama · 17/02/2024 12:42

I prefer Anna

Emmarunsfastnow · 17/02/2024 12:43

Lucy!

VoleChomper · 17/02/2024 15:00

Anna is a MN favourite but I find it quite drab.

I much prefer Lucy.

AmaryllisChorus · 17/02/2024 15:02

You could go for the Shakespearean name Luciana which combines the two!
I love both. Can you use one as a middle name: Anna Lucy or Lucy Anna?

TrustPenguins · 17/02/2024 15:05

Anna by far.

CharlieBoo · 17/02/2024 16:44

Lucy is much nicer, I find Anna a bit dull although it’s swooned over on MN I only know one who is mid 40’s.

HyacinthBoucket · 17/02/2024 17:22

Several people have thrown shade at the Mumsnetters who prefer Anna, like it's a bad thing to be on Mumsnet when they're on it, too. Anti-Mumsnet Mumsnet users!

LilyNotAllen · 17/02/2024 17:37

Anna is snoozeville and Lucy sounds like she belongs on The Only Way Is Essex. But if you love both use both on her you may not get the chance to use them again and there's plenty more names to fall in love with!

Sunnnybunny72 · 17/02/2024 18:15

Anna. Less wet than Lucy.
