I love both of these very much but can't decide which I prefer.

If you had two favourite names did you use both on your baby or save one hoping to use it later?

Lucy

Namedrama87 · 17/02/2024 22:59

Anna is the perfect name! Universal, short, simple, elegant, classic, sofisticated.

Lucy is wet.

IfYouLikedItThenYou · 17/02/2024 23:11

Anna is better.

Lucy is a bit cheap. makes me think of D listers. and also Lucy Pevensie who of all children in literature has an very high annoyance quotiant.

Several people have thrown shade at the Mumsnetters who prefer Anna, like it's a bad thing to be on Mumsnet when they're on it, too. Anti-Mumsnet Mumsnet users!

it's not that deep, love.

it's just an opinion about some random baby name.

Anna is the 2024 name just as Thea was the 2019 name.

I think you may have missed the point of the Baby Names section....

I prefer Anna by a long chalk.

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 18/02/2024 06:18

If it helps your decision, Lucy means light and Anna means grace.

You have great taste! BOTH beautiful I lean slightly more towards Lucy because it evokes springtime, youthfulness and happiness to me.

I loveee the Beatrix Potter spelling Lucie.

Lucy Anna is gorgeous.
If I were you I'd use both.

Anna is nothing like Thea!?

If Anna is like Thea, Lucy is like Ellie.

Minfor · 18/02/2024 11:09

Both solid names but don't think they flow together all that well as first name, middle name so I'd be inclined to save one. Agree with PP that they work well as sister names, and if you have a second girl you don't want to feel like you've 'wasted' a favourite name on a middle name.

Personally I'd choose Anna though as I find Lucy a bit twee and girly.

Honeybeebuzz · 18/02/2024 12:38

We had both on our list too, we went with Lucy as that just seemed to suit her more, funnily I sometimes call her Lucianna as a nickname, Anna is not her middle name. Sometimes i wish i called her Lucianna and then Lucy for short if thats something that would help

@LauderSyme

thank you for the I think you may have missed the point of the Baby Names section....

It really made me laugh. It was so beautifully understated as a comedy line!

I have a beautiful Lucy. I love the sound of Lucy Anna!

sigh

Thea used to be a name frequently waxed lyrical over on MN. That now seems to have waned. And it seems to me that now Anna has taken its place.

Hope that makes things a little clearer for you.

Lucy. Lovely meaning and has a very English quality to it.

Anna is regarded highly on an international level, whereas Thea does not hold the same level of acclaim. While it is understandable to have a personal preference for Lucy (which I share), comparing Thea to Anna seems inappropriate. Olivia has previously garnered significant praise on MN, does that automatically bring Lucy to a similar status as Olivia? How does it work?

ATM Lucy is a tad more commonly used in the UK. Though I've no doubt Anna is vastly more popular globally.
