Do you think some dated names are more loved than other dated names?

Kind of weird theoretical question.
do you think, among general population, some people love some dated names more than others?
For example, Julia is dated, but people like it more than Sandra, because it is romantic and has some quality in sound which makes people like Julia over other dated names
or when people disliked Gladys more than Edith, so Gladys is still not revived, while some Victorian names are back, and some people like Enid as well.

what would be your dated names everyone loves, but you find dreadful? It can be revived name.

I work with children and have never met a Helen.

The Doris thread just made me think poor kid.

Helen is around in its other forms - Ellie, Helena, Elena, Eliana, Elin...

I like Doris.

My much loved Grandma was called Gladys . She hated it . I remember her saying ““how could they have looked in the cradle at a lovely little baby and thought

Nevaeh is a name that needs to quickly date and disappear. Forever.

Agnes and Agatha are such ugly names.

@aliceinanwonderland , I think Nigel and Norman are fine.
Olive is too 'On the Buses'/Olive Oyl for me but I can see that it fits in with current trends.
Catherine has been around in other forms - Katherine, Kate, Katie, Kitty, Caitlin...
It's due a comeback. I think Cathy will come back in due course.

My paternal Grandmother was Alice Maud Mary and I always think the names go well together.

I love the Welsh form of Maud, Mallt.
It sounds like MaLLt where the LL is a bit like the ch in German milch, but absolutely not like the ch in Scottish loch.

Everyone loves Margot, Mabel, Edith, Matilda, Lydia. I think they all sound frumpy and dreadful.

I like the name Nigel 🫣 along with other boys names of a similar vintage that everyone else hates.

@KirstenBlest I've watched the programme and I fell in love with those names when I watched it years ago, but I didn't use them BECAUSE they were on the programme if you know what I mean

@marshmallowfinder wfinder , I'm not keen on them other than Matilda and Lydia. Lydia seems elegant but bin lid. Matilda seems a bit showy.

@Suchardchoccy , I know. I like Sybil but hear SYBIL! Rose and Ivy - not keen sorry but they are popular. Mabel and Ethel seem very old lady to me and Margot looks like Maggot. Margaret is much nicer.

Hilda. If Hilda ever makes a comeback I will know the end is nigh. What a bloody ugly name. My maternal grandmother was called Hilda, and hated it so much that she went by her middle name - and this was when Hilda was popular!

Sandra is an Ancient Greek name. Nothings gimmicky.

Infact this just proves the ops hypothesis. Some old names are just more accepted than others. Even to the extent that people think some very old names are not classic because they don't sound 'right'

I knew a Hilda in the late 80s when I was 18, she was a year or two younger than me and will be about 51 now. She was really cool, really into The Smiths, wore Dr Martens and had big backcombed hair like Ian McCulloch. Didn't look at all Hilda like but she kind of suited it

Rose is more common as a middle name and I know Ivy is popular but not around where I live (the popularity of Ivy actually put me off but I love the name and haven't heard it around my area)

I think Maud, Margot, Margaret, Audrey, Edith and Enid are all awful and loads of people love them. But I do like Elsie although I know it’s super popular now.

I think Elaine is due a comeback. El names seem very popular- Ella, Ellie, Elsie, Eleanor etc. it sounds dated but isn’t actually an ugly name imo.

Recent baby names i know are:

Vera, Maeve, Edith and various Eve variations.

Arthur, Herbie, Reggie for boys.

I'm not really keen on any of these names but definitely a trend

@Suchardchoccy , Fawlty Towers probably doesn't mean anything to your DC's generation. I'm of an age group where Rose and Ivy weren't much used. I associate Ivy with Corrie, so it's me not the names.

I’ve got a Maud, never did I think I would have a daughter called Maud but I fell in love with it when I was pregnant and no one could talk me out of it. She’s called Maudie as a pet name.

Ive known a few baby Stella’s just recently. That wasn’t a name I was expecting to come back but it has. With boys, I’m amazed that Dennis has been revived yet Derek hasn’t.
