Hi

Our daughter is due next month and we can’t decide on a name at all. I would be so grateful if you could please give me your opinions on these -

Eve
Eva
Sophia
Imogen
Emmeline
Amelie
Elodie
Emilia

Emmeline has always been a favourite (nn em/emmy) but I’m starting to second guess myself - will I be constantly correcting the pronunciation (‘leen’ not ‘line’) or people hearing Emily?

Same concern with Emilia/Amelie - will I be constantly correcting for Amelia/Emily?

TIA!

I really like Emma.
But from your list I like Sophia. Imogen Elodie, Amelie and Emilia.
I hear lots of Eve/Eva’s.

Chelsfree · 05/02/2024 08:22

Thanks so much!

I love Emma too and it was on the list, but middle name will be Louise (nod to a family member) so I think it might be a bit too late 80s/early 90s?!

Lovely name choices! I like them all!

My personal favourite is Imogen - it’s a lovely name that isn’t overused or dated to any particular decade, and I like “Immy” too.

Eve / Eva - gorgeous names - simple, nice for all ages. Quite overused at the moment when you add together all the Evelyn’s, Evie’s, Eve’’s, Eva’s, Ava’s etc, if that matter to you?

Sophia - I really like this. I know it’s very popular at the moment on the name charts, but I personally only know of one, so maybe it depends on area.

Emmeline / Amelie / Emilia - I’m a big fan of all of these - beautiful and not overused. As you say the only disadvantage Is the mishearing for “Emily” and how much that matters to you.

Elodie - a lovely name too - not overused and very pretty, suits all ages. She can be Ellie as a short version, which is quite overused (if that matters to you?)

Onelife2024 · 05/02/2024 08:40

Just noticed your update about Emma as an option - that would be my personal top pick - one of my all time favourites. I wouldn’t worry too much about the middle name giving an 80’s vibe, it’s got a lovely vintage feel in my opinion.

Nicebloomers · 05/02/2024 08:51

Emma Louise is lovely. Yes it’s absolutely got a late 70’s/ early 80’s vintage (this is my vintage and I knew plenty) but so what? They are still pretty, classic names and work well through all ages.

I do think Elodie is a good choice if you want something a bit more unusual though.

GreyhoundGal1 · 05/02/2024 09:04

I love the name Emmeline, I think if that's your favourite use it. Great namesake too. Lots of names have different ways of saying them and I don't think it's too much of a problem. People learn it once and then you don't need to repeat. I'd naturally pronounce it "leen" like you want though.

Second favourites would be Elodie or Imogen.

I think the rest are all beautiful names but them and their close variants are very popular, so depends if that bothers you.

OctaviaRedQueen · 05/02/2024 09:48

Imogen or Elodie for me.

NachosAndCheese · 05/02/2024 12:36

Love Eva but there are soooo many Evies, Evelyns, Eva’s and Avas.

Amelie is nice but again there are so many Amelia’s and Emilias and Millie’s.

Not keen on Emmeline, the only one I know hates her name and insists on Emma.

FayCarew · 05/02/2024 12:42

Eve - nice but Evie is very popular, as are Ava, Ivy, Evelyn, Eva, Edie etc. Will date.
Eva - don't like it
Sophia - overused. Sofia is also overused
Imogen - ok, don't like Immy
Emmeline - OK, prefer Emma.
Amelie - dated. Amelia and Emily overused
Elodie - meh.
Emilia - too close to Amelia. Emelia misspelling is awful.

Go with Emmeline, you love it.

MaloneMeadow · 05/02/2024 12:53

Eva!! I may be biased as I have one but I think it’s a gorgeous name. She’s 19 now and loves it. Everyone on MN says it’s overused but she’s only ever met 2 other Evas in her life! Eve/Evie/Ava seem to be far more common. I prefer Eva as it has more substance to it

Sophia and Emilia are nice but very overdone

Love Amelie, so pretty and elegant!

Elodie - not a fan

Emmeline - bit of a mouthful and too old fashioned for my taste. Emmi is a nice nickname though

Imogen - really don’t like this as it has a very harsh sound

I agree with a PP about Emma - I absolutely love it. A timeless classic but really lovely name

useitorlose · 05/02/2024 12:54

Imogen Louise

Amdone123 · 05/02/2024 12:57

I love Imogen. Elodie is getting quite popular if that bothers you.
Emma Louise is lovely.
I also quite like Emmy.

BlueChampagne · 05/02/2024 12:58

Imogen NN Midge

Mumofgirls2017 · 05/02/2024 13:23

I like Emmeline but had this thought too and wasn’t a fan of Emmy. However it’s a lovely strong name. I like Amelie too, but again mixed up with Emily. Out of your others I like

elodie (I love nn Edie)
eva

the rest are also fine they’re just my picks!

theduchessofspork · 05/02/2024 13:25

I would favour Emma if you like it - it’s less used than Emmeline - I wouldn’t worry about Emma Louise - it won’t sound old fashioned to her peers

Emmeline would be second choice - popular but not madly overdone

Imogen - nice enough and similarly quite popular

I wouldn’t use any of the rest - they are all nice names but all done to death, other than Elodie - but she’ll end up yet another Ellie so it’s pretty much the same

Chelsfree · 05/02/2024 14:05

Thanks so much for your input everyone- this has been really really helpful!

I think I’m swaying between Emma and Eva.

I agree that Imogen is gorgeous but now I’ve thought more about it we have a ‘…son’ surname and when I say the first name and surname together it doesn’t sound quite right. Fine with the middle name, but realistically her peers won’t use that day to day.

I really dislike Ellie so I think that takes Elodie out sadly.

Still welcoming any other thoughts/suggestions of course!

OopsieeDaisy · 05/02/2024 15:28

I love Emilia but had the same worries with regards to always having to correct people thinking it’s Amelia so we didn’t go for it.
I like Elodie as a French name in a French accent and it looks pretty but I think it’s a little odd in an English accent, if that’s the case.
If you really like Emma, I wouldn’t let having Louise as a middle name put you off. I know of a few Emma Louise’s of my generation (30s) but middle names are so rarely used I don’t think it matters.

wherearemywellingtons · 05/02/2024 15:49

Emma and Eva are both gorgeous. Emma is less commonly used at the moment but there are probably more Emma’s in the general population than Eva’s. Emma is more of a timeless classic whereas Eva is more current and of the moment. So hard to choose! You’ve always loved Emmeline and Emma is closest to that, so maybe that gives Emma the edge?

miniaturepixieonacid · 05/02/2024 18:35

Eve - it's ok but it's least favourite of all the 'Eve' names.
Eva - really like it.
Sophia - like it. Very popular but it's pretty.
Imogen - really like it.
Emmeline - quite like it. I would automatically say Emma-lynn. Don't know if that's what you would want.
Amelie - quite like it. I wouldn't confuse it with Amelia. There are plenty of Amelies around.
Elodie - like it. Apparently popular but I've actually never met one and I'm a teacher.
Emilia - not that keen. I don't like the 'mealy' sound in Amelia and Emilia. But I wouldn't confuse it with Emily.
I see you're also now thinking Emma - I like this and it's quite fresh now. Not that many around.

Most of these names are on similar lines so I presume you've already considered the other obviously similar ones but, just in case, there's also:
Evie, Evelyn, Evangeline, Evadne, Everley
Sophie, Safiya, Sapphire
Imelda
Amelia, Amy, Amaya, Amber, Amanda
Eloise, Ella, Eleanor, Elisa, Elina, Eliana, Elise, Elsie, Elora, Elowen
Emanuela, Ember

KayEmAy · 05/02/2024 18:38

Personal order of preference -

  1. Eve
  2. Emmeline
  3. Amelie

Eve is a long time favorite and I am partial to short names, I also really like the other two and love that they are classic but not overly common

marshmallowfinder · 05/02/2024 18:44

I only like Emmeline and Imogen. Elodie sounds like L.O.D. Emilia sounds like eh MEALY uh which is a very ugly sound and the rest are rather overused. Louise is a lovely middle name though.

Chelsfree · 05/02/2024 18:46

My husband pointed out earlier that ‘Eve Louise’ doesn’t sound right and now I can’t unhear it hence why it didn’t make the final cut! Although I do probably slightly prefer it over Eva…

Some gorgeous suggestions here thanks! Some were on my list but husband vetoed 😔

I wasn’t necessarily worried about Amelie and Amelia getting mixed up, more Amelie getting confused with Emily and Emilia with Amelia (the latter two sound pretty much the same with my accent!) - this wasn’t a big deal to my husband but the more I consider it, I think it’s enough to put me off

Eva is by far my favourite on your original list. It's sassy, whereas I find most of the others quite frilly or wishy-washy.

Emma is also gorgeous though, a name with character. I don't think it matters at all that Emma Louise was a popular combination in the 80s. It's not overly used now so her peers won't realise or care. Most of them will be something Rose, May or Grace so she'll be different within her own generation.
