Which name from Greek mythology is your favourite?

Just trying to get some more inspiration as we love names from mythology.

It's for a girl, but you can say what it would be for a boy too, if you'd like.

It can be unusual, we need a first and a middle name, so the unusual ones would probably go on the middle name list.

Terpsichore, loved the name ever since I was a child and saw the film Down to Earth with the very beautiful Rita Hayworth.

Circe - the GOT thing might put me off but it’s spelt differently

Selene - similar and no GOT trouble

Ianthe

Hera

Ariadne (Ari)

Clio

Antigone (Tiggy!) - great character too

Ismene (she might have been a bit wet but it’s a nice name)

Athene (prefer to Athena)

Artemis (I also like Diana if you’d consider Roman)

It’s a shame about Isis, lovely name…

I like Cassia too, though I don’t think that’s mythological

Electra
Lalage

Ooh I had a brilliant aunt Lalage - really good artist too

I like Electra too - but it does slightly sound like the kind of thing the party faithful would have named their daughters in the good old USSR

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 03/02/2024 22:42

Artemis - really love it
Callista

Odysseus

Only because we watched about his adventures when I went to primary school

LoveTheJudgement · 04/02/2024 12:43

Oedipus and Electra

Oedipus and Electra

You're a complex sort of person.

BouleDeSuif · 04/02/2024 12:51

Callisto

NWnature · 05/02/2024 21:34

Antigone and Persephone are both lovely

ChelseeDagger · 05/02/2024 21:40

I like Ismene and Electra.

Antigone reminds me of Tigger..

tillytoodles1 · 05/02/2024 21:41

Athenaeum.

ChelseeDagger · 05/02/2024 21:41

How about Minerva?

Bit of a tall order to live up to, but then so is Helen and there's millions of those milling around.

MyopicBunny · 05/02/2024 21:43

Electra
Penelope
Persephone
Apollo
Calypso

Some of these poor people were so unfortunate though, eg Iphigenia.

BarbaricPeach · 05/02/2024 21:45

I liked Ariadne but I've met one recently who went by Addy and it just turned me off. Why give your child such a beautiful and unusual name but give her a nickname that's really common for a lot of other names.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/02/2024 21:49

Artemis

Renamed · 05/02/2024 21:52

Selene
Persephone
Hecate
Despoena
Megara

As PP said, some names are quite ill omened

SunflowerSeeds123 · 05/02/2024 22:10

Not Greek but Minerva. Originally came from Etruscan (pre-Roman) folklore. Goddess of war, justice and learning. Her Greek counterpart is Athena.

Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter was aptly named.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 05/02/2024 22:12

@LenaLamont 😂

Chestnutsroastgreen · 05/02/2024 23:01

Chloe
Penelope
Cassandra

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 05/02/2024 23:10

Briseis - but mainly because I love the retelling of her story by Pat Barker

Circe

Andromeda

TooningOut · 05/02/2024 23:11

Artemis
Persephone

Stillnormal · 05/02/2024 23:15

Think about how you want your daughter to feel about her name and everything that others project on it and so her for her whole life mostly I’d say. As a main priority.

Malibu12 · 05/02/2024 23:16

Olympia nickname Pia

CurrentHun · 05/02/2024 23:18

Iris

CurrentHun · 05/02/2024 23:19

Pia is a different Latin name but is pretty.
