Tobias or Tobin?

Hi all,
Baby boy is due in 5w time and struggling for a name we both agree on and is not too popular,
or too traditional...
We both like Toby, but as a shortening, of either Tobias or Tobin..

What are your thoughts? Tobin is far less common than Tobias and we like it but would like to know how it sounds to others?

Thanks! Blush

Tobias. Tobin sounds like a surname.

Marchintospring · 02/02/2024 01:08

I know a couple of Tobins. Middle class and left leaning parents in every case. One is in a semi famous band.

I don’t know any but Tobias sounds a bit wanky and try hard.

Babla · 02/02/2024 01:21

Those are awful just call him Toby

mathanxiety · 02/02/2024 01:37

Tobias is a biblical name. It's a classic name with ancient origins.

Tobin is an Irish surname. To me, Tobin is the try hard one. Also, it makes me think 'toe rag'.

mathanxiety · 02/02/2024 01:39

And honestly, as an Irish person, names like Rafferty and Sullivan and Tobin, etc just sound ridiculous.

HirplesWithHaggis · 02/02/2024 02:31

Tobin makes me think of Peter of that ilk.

I knew a Tobyn once - a better spelling maybe (though I prefer Tobias as the more tradition long version for Toby)

DragonFly98 · 02/02/2024 02:45

They are both awful, just use Toby it doesn't need lengthening and is a nice enough name.

comfyshoes2022 · 02/02/2024 02:47

Tobin sounds like a girl’s name to me because I associate it with the American footballer Tobin Heath.

ilovesooty · 02/02/2024 02:58

Beat me to it. I immediately thought of Peter Tobin.

MaloneMeadow · 02/02/2024 03:22

Definitely Tobias. Sorry OP but Tobin is awful, it literally says to-bin! You’re asking for him to be bullied

Jammeroo · 02/02/2024 03:29

Tobin makes me think of the serial killer so that would be a no for me.

Would you consider Toby? It's probably what it would get shortened to anyway.

kittybiscuits · 02/02/2024 03:44

I love Tobin and know a very cool Tobin. Go for it. It's too cool for MN.

BingoMarieHeeler · 02/02/2024 03:57

Yep, Tobin = murderer. Second thought is a bin full of toes. Sorry!

octoberfarm · 02/02/2024 04:57

Love Tobin! Much prefer it to Tobias.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 02/02/2024 05:15

I prefer Toby so would just use that, it’s a proper name in its own right and doesn’t feel like a shortening

AdalineStephen · 02/02/2024 06:02

I can't understand people saying Tobias is "wanky and try-hard' when it's a perfectly normal name from which Toby is derived. That's like saying, "Don't call him David. Just call him Dave."

Onelife2024 · 02/02/2024 06:24

Definitely Tobias for my taste, but agree with pp that I think I personally would just name him Toby.

OldBeyondMyYears · 02/02/2024 06:25

Tobias...(not sure why people are being so rude about it, it's a very ordinary name!)

I've never actually heard of Tobin.

AboutYouAndPeru · 02/02/2024 06:27

Where I grew up Tobin was the name of a funeral firm. So that is what I think of.

Tobias is nice and quite classic. My DH suggested 'Tobermory' with nn Toby when I was having DS2 which is also nice IMO

Tobias. Tobin sounds like a surname.

Tobin is very much a surname.

Fetaa · 02/02/2024 06:40

Love Tobias

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 02/02/2024 06:42

I really like Tobias. I'm afraid I associate Tobin with the serial killer Peter Tobin.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 02/02/2024 06:51

First thing I thought was Peter Tobin sorry, I like Tobias

sciencemama · 02/02/2024 07:04

Toby sounds better imo
