This is just a bit of fun. I saw someone post the same question on MN in 2014 and was curious how the names have changed in the last 10 years.

Mine are:

Layla
Charlotte
Myla
Ava
Ella

Edit - Apologies, I was meant to quote the post from thedutchessofspork questioning someone else's list of Eva, Olivia, Ava, Isla and Isabella.

Obviously I can't answer for other poster about whether they're recent births but I really don't understand what's surprising about that particular list? Especially considering there are many lists of 5 on here containing far less 'usual' choices. I don't understand why this one in particular is being questioned as to how recent it is?

Whilst they may all be dropping in terms of actually numbers (as are all 'popular' names, as the pool of names people choose from gets wider and wider each year), Olivia, Ava and Isla are still clearly going to be top 10 when the 2022 and subsequent 2023 ONS data is officially released (probablyeven top 5 still), and Isabella probably top 20 and Eva top 30-40. All 5 are still very much in use (Olivia was still number one when the last set on official data was released in 2021!).

Just because names like Luna, Maeve, Margot, Mila, Penelope etc may be rapidly rising, doesn't mean the old favourites aren't still reigning supreme. I would not be at all surprised to hear that the last 5 baby girls somebody knows of are called Olivia, Ava, Isla, Isabella and Eva. It's hardly like OP listed 80s classics like Stacey, Michelle, Leanne, Claire and Stephanie (for example). I could understand why that might raise some eyebrows!

For what it's worth, I still hear Olivia and Isla all the time around me. They don't seem to be losing favour in my area at all.

The name Eilidh has cropped up a couple of times. I've never heard of it before; how do you pronounce it? @toastofthetown @ChiaraMontague

It's pronounced like Ay-Lee

So interesting to see Maeve becoming so popular in the UK! It’s a very old Irish name, spelled Maedhbh and I wouldn’t know any under the age of 40. Ditto with Orla, would know a few in their 30s but no younger. I think both are beautiful and due a come back

The power of popular culture. Maeve has been used in a couple of hit TV shows in recent years I believe. Now it's everywhere.

You can pretty much guarantee a name which wasn't previously popular will become the next big thing if it gets used either in a hit film or TV show, or in a popular song, or if a celebrity uses it for their own baby.

Think Ruby Ruby Ruby Ruby in the late 00s (and Ella - UmbrELLA Ella Ella around the same time), Ivy since Beyonce used it for her daughter's middle name in the early 2010s. Lyra since Ed Sheeran named his daughter that, Arlo since the release of The Good Dinosaur, August since it was used by the royals etc. Names can suddenly rise 100s of places pretty much over night if they get the right sort of exposure.

Another good example would be Harper since the Beckhams used it. Luca after the Disney film too. Elsa had quite a big spike in popularity too when Frozen originally came out. That seemed to die away pretty quickly but I'm sure it was around that time the similar 'Elsie" started to rise rapidly too and that's still very popular now.

@CamdenQueen I love the name Maeve. It will be my DD's middle name after my Grandma.

I completely agree with @BoleynMemories13 , popular culture is so powerful at bringing names into the spotlight. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with that! No celebrity or TV show owns a name, and if you love the name then use it.

Interestingly, it seems that Sophie is trumping Sophia now. Elsie seems to be rising in popularity. Also saw a few Dahlias and Lyras. I think the soft -a ending is here to stay for a while longer!

What makes me mad is when people say a name is dated or 80s/90s. It made me happy to see a few Jessicas on here because I think Jessica is a beautiful name that deserved its time in the top 10. Think of calling my dd that.

What other names do Mumsnetters think deserve a comeback? Have you seen any names that you've fallen in love with recently?
