Hedy for a girl

DH and I love it, it became an idea after watching a fascinating doc about Hedy Lamarr. Pronounced Head-ee.
We are both French and English speaking and DH thinks in England a daughter would be likely to get unpleasant jokes made about it.
Thoughts?

You mean Heidi ?

Hedy will get sexual jokes all day. Gives Hedy by name, by nature.... just guarantees she's viewed a slag. cruel name I think.

Thulpelly · 18/01/2024 11:27

I love it too, but wouldn’t use it for the same reasons you mention :/

itsallabitofamystery · 18/01/2024 11:28

Hedy? Gives head? Please don't name your child this.

Mumsanetta · 18/01/2024 11:28

Hedy gives head? Not a chance I would choose that for a girl.

GavinHendersonsChipPan · 18/01/2024 11:28

Her given name was Hedwig, not Hedy. that was her nickname.

fivetriangulartrees · 18/01/2024 11:29

Wow, never heard anyone say Hedy is a "slaggy" name. Never crossed my mind. I know a Hedy and although most people can't pronounce the name when they first see it written down, the reaction is always either "oh the actress!" or "oh the pioneer of WiFi!" Cool, either way. Excellent name.

TiredCatLady · 18/01/2024 11:29

Hedy was short for Hedwig.

I don’t see that it would be a problem as per previous posters but the spelling vs pronunciation could be.

Thulpelly · 18/01/2024 11:29

Hedy Lamar’s real name was Hedwig, don’t love that.

WaltzingWaters · 18/01/2024 11:32

I think it just sounds like you’ve not got the name Heidi quite right.
And I do think it leaves a lot of opportunity for kids to make sexual jokes when a bit older.
It’s a big no from me.

Olika · 18/01/2024 11:35

Sounds like a nickname

Nicebloomers · 18/01/2024 11:53

Hedera (botanical name for Ivy) nn Hedy might give a bit more wiggle room if there’s a worry about a mean nn

SisterMichaelsHabit · 18/01/2024 11:55

She was a really awesome person but as this thread shows, people don't know who she was and will automatically jump to nasty nicknames so I'd go with something different personally.

Onelife2024 · 18/01/2024 15:27

Sorry op I don’t like it. Heidi maybe? Or Hebe?

WashItTomorrow · 18/01/2024 16:37

I immediately think of Hedy Lamarr. But I wouldn’t use it.

Sandysandwich · 18/01/2024 17:26

With the pronounciation I just hear Heady like how you might describe a strong drink or an aftershave

PurpleReindeer2 · 18/01/2024 17:31

She would be badly bullied. Don't do this.

ManchesterBea · 18/01/2024 17:38

Please don't.

User13579367337 · 18/01/2024 17:39

Immediately made me think of blowjobs. I assumed I was pronouncing it wrong, but I’ve just read I’m not

ImthatBoleyngirl · 18/01/2024 17:41

I immediately thought of Hedy Lamarr, but I really don't like the way it sounds.

Onelife2024 · 18/01/2024 17:42

Haddie is nice as a nn for Angharad?

Or Hettie as a nn for Harriet / Henrietta?

idontlikealdi · 18/01/2024 17:43

Heidi is infinitley better.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/01/2024 17:49

I wouldn't even think about a joke to be honest. All I think about is Hedy Lamarr, staggeringly glamorous and amazingly intelligent. Without her I doubt I'd be be posting this from my mobile. Teenage boys will make prurient comments, who cares? Perhaps they might learn something.

It's better than Heidi ( whose name was really Adelheide).

TeenLifeMum · 18/01/2024 17:56

Bullied for being named after an inspiring inventor and actress? Wtf? The name is fine. I have a Heidi and her friends sometimes call her Hedi - no bullying. Mind you, according to mn my youngest has a porn star name but interestingly children of her generation don’t think like that so no bullying there either. Mn is weird about names. Choose what you love.

11NigelTufnel · 18/01/2024 18:14

If you are French, would you pronounce it without the hard H as in Eddie?

Waterybrook · 18/01/2024 19:37

Yes I know a Hedy short for Hedwig but she is Norwegian. Not teased in London at any rate.
