Rafay for a boy?

Gingka · 17/01/2024 08:22

Hi everyone!

Boy name dilemma - Rafay?

Yay or Nay?

DH pronounces it as Raf-ae but I think it’s better as Raf-ay (as the spelling).

I don’t want to condemn him to a life of mispronunciation, what do you think?

Thank you!

I would think a misspelling of Raffy short for Rafferty

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 08:23

Have you made up the name?

I would think a misspelling of Raffy short for Rafferty

This was my first thought too when I saw the thread title.

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 08:25

Ah you haven’t made it up but

In 2021 there were only 12 baby boys named Rafay.

but it’s certainly an uncommon one!

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 17/01/2024 08:25

I've never heard of it.

SirChenjins · 17/01/2024 08:26

I had to check the pronunciation online as it's not a name I'm familiar with (it's a Muslim name I think?) and it seems to be raaf-ae - so I think your DH is right.

user1492757084 · 17/01/2024 08:28

Name him Rafferty or Rafael or Raphael.
Use the nick name ..

Raffy, Raf, Raph, Rafae or Raffay

Plexie · 17/01/2024 08:28

How is -ae pronounced differently to -ay?

If I heard the name before seeing it spelt, I'd think it was Raffy.

spearthatbroc · 17/01/2024 08:28

I don’t want to condemn him to a life of mispronunciation,

you will do if you give him this name. fact.

Have you made up the name?

All names were made up at one point.

But, no for Rafay. How about Raffy for Rafferty maybe?

BonheursTrousers · 17/01/2024 08:29

It’s a Muslim name and an unusual one. My daughter’s name is mispronounced all the time in the U.K. and it drives me nuts ( but I never have this issue in European countries).

I’d either choose a Muslim easier to pronounce for uk English speakers, make it a middle name, or change it it Rafferty ‘rage’.

MaggieFS · 17/01/2024 08:29

Definitely condemning him to a life of mispronunciation.

I have a name which has two pronounciations, and it's a PITA. It's all well and good as a grumpy middle aged woman now giving no shits about correcting people, but I spent most of my youth with the wrong name.

Call him Raffy, if that's what you're aiming for.

BonheursTrousers · 17/01/2024 08:29

‘Rafe’

Finti · 17/01/2024 08:31

Nice name but I see issues too! Also, Op, with your pronunciation, All I can think of is Rick-ay.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 17/01/2024 08:36

I like it. I would instinctively say Raf-ay too. The y makes it a longer sound to me.

(Rather than raf-ae - like the tennis player Rafa?)

itsmyp4rty · 17/01/2024 08:39

What about Raife nn Rafay. I think Rafay would be better as a nickname rather than their full name.

I also can't work out the different between an 'ay' sound as in say and an 'ae' sound as in Mae.

Gingka · 17/01/2024 08:40

Thank you all! Officially off the list :)

I can't see how it's hard to pronounce really

CaribbeanCupcake · 17/01/2024 09:34

LaurieStrode · 17/01/2024 09:42

OMG, pure Eastenders 😂

wasanneofcleves · 17/01/2024 13:27

Very weird name. It reads like "Ray-fay" in my head. Is that house you pronounce it? Raffy is nice as a short name for Rafferty. Can you not go with that?
