We are currently set on the name Arlo for our baby boy due next month however I also love the names Sonny and Marley. Would you consider these boys names or girls names. I have personally only met one boy Sonny and no Marley's 🧐

Both boys names and more unusual than Arlo. There’s loads of Arlos at the moment.

Do watch or read Marley and me too as you’ll get people mention this is you use that name

Metallicant · 19/01/2024 13:54

All boys names even though I do know a female Sonny

Emsbutterfly · 19/01/2024 14:06

I have a girl called Marley although would have also used it for a boy. Id say it’s a unisex name, and would also say the others are too

My teenage son has two friends called Marley both boys, they're both good at sports-random observation but the name very much is a boys name. I know of a couple of boys named Sonny too. Prefer Marley and Arlo personally but I consider them all boys names.

I've only ever known one Arlo and he was male. I've known both male and female Sonnys and Marleys.

Imisssleep2 · 19/01/2024 18:23

Only known these names for boys

Moominby · 19/01/2024 20:49

I know a girl called Marley. I'm familiar with the name Arno for a boy, named either after the river Arno or meaning Eagle in it's Germanic origin.

Wotsitoverthere · 19/01/2024 20:51

They are all male dog names to me...

jm9138 · 19/01/2024 23:32

Actually thinking about it the more Arlos the better - means in a few years time when I am at the Garden Centre at Christmas I can get a bauble with his name on rather than having to get a blank and writing it in with a sharpie.

Gingermango · 20/01/2024 09:38

My son has a friend called Marleigh and there was a Disney show called ‘Sonny with a chance’ both girls names in those instances but can be both

Fouristhemagicnumber · 20/01/2024 16:18

Marley - girl
Arlo and Sonny - boys

Unfortunately I live near a town called Harlow in Essex which is called 'arlow by the locals 😂🙈
The link with the town would put people off that live near me for sure and as a result I have never met an Arlo!
I know a couple of boys called Sonny though and really like the name.
Good luck! X

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 20/01/2024 20:40

To me, Arlo is definitely a boy, but I think the name is a bit ‘now’.

Sonny is a boy. I know a lovely one.

Marley is a boy, though I’d probably mishear it as Marnie and assume a girl! And now I’m singing Marley and Marley from A Muppets’ Christmas Carol!

maureeeen · 20/01/2024 20:55

They can work for either. I've met a boy and a girl Marley. One boy Sonny and a girl but spelled Sunnie.

I like Arlo the best. The other two feel a bit gimmicky to me, like can you imagine a serious adult introducing themselves as Sonny or Marley?

All I think of when I hear Arlo is the dinosaur from the Disney film!

Issorryreallythehardestword · 21/01/2024 21:58

Really sorry but these all sound like names for puppies to me!

Panic71 · 21/01/2024 22:00

I teach
Arlo is becoming more common
Never taught a Sonny or a Marley
Congratulations and best of luck!
