Please could you tell me which name you like best, pros and cons, and other suggestion of a similar vein to Juliette, Cordelia and Lavinia?

Just saw jet as a nn. I like that!

chickpea1982 · 17/01/2024 17:36

I started to write this, then thought: "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all", and deleted it. But then I thought - you did ask, and honestly is valuable, and if I don't say anything then you might call your child a terrible name and condemn them (and you) to lifelong ridicule... So, to be brutally honest OP, I would cringe if I was introduced to a Cordellia or a Lavinia. Juliette is fine though. Please take this as constructive criticism!

Adelaide?

Constanza?

Not Constanza if you know anyone who listens to the Archers on R4.!

I have never heard anyone not pronounce the t in Juliet.

@PersephonePomegranate23 I think it would be hard to find a name that someone has had and they have not died 😂 we all die eventually! I already have two children with non Shakespearean names. But Cordelia has always been on the list and Juliet is a new one on the list. I love the works of Shakespeare too but these names aren't inspired by such. In fact I probably associate Cordelia more with Buffy ❤️

@chickpea1982 oh dear. Lavinia is inspired from one of my all time favourite gymnasts Lavinia Milosovici. Take on board some people think Cordelia is condemning a child 😭

Cordelia is lovely, Cordy is a cool nickname. Ditto Juliette and Jet.

Julie is a whole other name, not a nn so that shouldn't happen (but I agree Julie is a bit drippy).

Am not a fan of Adaline, sorry.

Onelife2024 · 17/01/2024 17:47

Juliette (or Juliet) is still my firm favourite from your list, but I much prefer Adeline to Cordelia - I would be happy to introduce myself as Juliet or Adeline, but would cringe if I had to say my name was Cordelia as it sounds a little frilly / pretentious to me. But that is probably different in different areas of the country.

Purtyburty · 17/01/2024 17:48

I appreciate all the feedback - it is great to get public opinion without have to tell family 😂

All the girls I know called Adeline or similar always are called Addie, so I would be sure to have a nn you like too.

BlastedPimples · 17/01/2024 17:57

Cordelia.

Juliet

Lavinia which to me sounds like such a wet blanket name.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 17/01/2024 18:02

Love the name Adeline!!

LauderSyme · 17/01/2024 18:06

How about

Adalia
Audelia
Cornelia
Valenzia
Lisette
Georgette
Colette
Claudette
Coraline
Avaline

MrsSunshine2b · 07/10/2024 21:31

Juliette is my favourite, Cordelia is also very nice.

Lavinia makes me think of lavatory, and the vain bully in A Little Princess.

Peccary · 08/10/2024 19:51

I have a Juliet and it's commonly misspelled as Juliette

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2024 19:54

Do you say it as Juliette, @Peccary ? Do you say Julie-ET or as JOO-li-et?

TheCultureHusks · 08/10/2024 19:54

For me it would be Juliette, although I prefer non-fussy, I’ve always preferred this spelling as Juliet is too close to Julie for me.

Cordelia is harsh and shortening not great. Caroline? (Caro)

Lavinia I like a lot but, Lav!

Juliette is great.

No33 · 08/10/2024 20:00

I love Lavinia, but the story in Titus is absolutely off putting for me. Titus is my favourite play too!

I like Ophelia and Alice

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2024 20:38

@TheCultureHusks , I feel the opposite. Juliet is more like Julia, and Juliette more like Julie.
The -ette spelling makes me think of serviette.

GoldenLegend · 09/10/2024 15:55

Laetitia

Geranen · 09/10/2024 15:57

I love Lavinia. Why on earth would it make anyone cringe? It's a classic name.

SallyWD · 09/10/2024 16:20

I love Juliette or Julia. The other two names are a little too frilly and posh for my liking.

colderandeatsmincepiesalot · 09/10/2024 16:21

Love love love Cordelia.
Juliette is nice too but I think might be shortened to Julie
Lavinia is nice but could be shortened to Lav...

Rockmehardplace · 09/10/2024 23:50

Juliette by a country mile, followed by Cordelia. Lavinia…..would you want Lav as a nn??

what about Constance, Portia or Cadence?
