Due our DS1 in a couple of months and considering this name!

Do you like it?

And how would you pronounce it?

What is the difference in sounding between 'Arry (like Harry with dropped H) and Ah-ree ? We are not from the uK and in past threads people said it's pronounced either 'arry or ' ah-ree but what does it mean? Any words to rhyme that will help me understand the difference?

We expect it to be pronounced like Ah - re .

Is this how you would pronounce it?

I’ve only ever heard it pronounced to rhyme with Harry in the UK.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 10/01/2024 20:25

There are so many different accents around the U.K. that make pronunciations so unique.
Especially with a name with an R, it will depend if they are rhotic or non-rhotic.

For example I'm Scottish and have that rolling R sound in my accent, but someone else may miss out the R sound almost completely.

DuchessOfSausage · 10/01/2024 20:25

More like Ar-ee. I'd think it was short for Aristotle and that there was a greek connection.
Aris (Are-is) is quite nice.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 10/01/2024 20:26

It will also depend on if they stress the first A or the middle Ree sound more too.

DinoRodney · 10/01/2024 20:26

I quite like it, and it rhymes with Barry or Harry round here . Tbh I would probably stick with Harry.

msmatcha · 10/01/2024 20:27

I know an Ari - he's from Naples and pronounces it to rhyme with Harry.

evtheria · 10/01/2024 20:27

I'd say Ah-ree but I didn't grow up here, and I think I've prev heard of a tv character with this name, it sounds familiar. I assume a lot of people are going to say 'arry like Harry, unless they're a big Ariana Grande fan (it's her nickname).

ProfessorDoredumble · 10/01/2024 20:28

I love Arie, very much Arry but also airy (Oz accent). I knew one once so very positive memories of a wonderful man; I miss him daily.

Mushroomwithaview · 10/01/2024 20:31

I've never heard it rhyme with Harry.

I know a couple of Ari's and it's pronounced R.E. (R like in shark, and E like in knee). Emphasis on the first syllable.

Mushroomwithaview · 10/01/2024 20:32

Like the start of Arianna Grande!

DanceMumTaxi · 10/01/2024 20:34

I like. It was on our list if dc2 had been a boy. I would pronounce it Ah-ree, like Ari Gold in Entourage.

NewName24 · 10/01/2024 20:34

In in a multicultural City in the Midlands.
I've known 2 that were old enough to tell me their name themselves.
Both said it like Harry without the H / Barry without the B / Carrie without the C

The one was quite young. The teenage lad was very fed up of everyone assuming he was called Harry but using lazy speech and dropping the H

Whitewhitewine2 · 10/01/2024 20:36

@Mushroomwithaview

Perfect! The short of answer I was looking for, R.E is how I would pronounce Ari too.

But how is Harry pronounced? Is it not Har - ree?

Meadowflower2023 · 10/01/2024 20:41

I think I'd pronounce it Ar ree.

I personally prefer Aurie (I'd not heard of this until I saw Aurie Styla on Richard Osmans House of Games the other week) but I just think it's a lovely boys name and unusual.

janfebmarchapril · 10/01/2024 20:41

I'd say Ah ree. I know a French Henri that's pronounced Ah ree. I wouldn't say Arry

GreatGateauxsby · 10/01/2024 20:43

I hear it like Ari Gold from Entourage the tv show.

Which is Ah-ree

great name - I really like it

I’m not very good at these but to me Harry is pronounced Ha-ree

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 10/01/2024 20:50

I know an Indian Ari.

If you are in the U.K. people will mispronounce it Arry rather than Ah-ree so if you choose it better be ready to deal with that

NewName24 · 10/01/2024 20:54

But how is Harry pronounced? Is it not Har - ree?

No.
In England, whatever your accent as far as I can think, the 'Ha' in Harry is like the 'hat' in 'hat' not 'har' as in 'hard'

So it is said Ha t ree

JessicaPeach · 10/01/2024 21:56

I have an Ariel shortened to Ari and we pronounce it Arry.

ThursdayTomorrow · 10/01/2024 22:03

Definitely ‘arry (like Harry with a dropped H).

Jennyjojo5 · 10/01/2024 22:33

i know quite a few Jewish Ari’s and they’re short for Ariel

CurlewKate · 10/01/2024 22:54

Why do you want to use it?

Aparecium · 10/01/2024 22:55

I would say it AH-rih, but then I have a non-English name which ends in a short 'ih'. I don't think native English speakers can hear the difference between the short 'ih' and the long 'ee' which comes naturally to them. They cannot seem to say it. so I am resigned to hearing my name said with a long 'ee' at the end.

Blacknailer · 10/01/2024 23:00

Love it. I think of it as a Hebrew name but I'm sure it could be from other origins too.
