Georgia or Cora?

lunarodgers · 03/01/2024 00:27

Narrowed down our girls list to Georgia or Cora - can I have a mumsnet vote please?!

Little sister for Anna.

I'm leaning slightly more towards Cora, DH slightly more towards Georgia.

I don't particularly like George / Georgie as a shortening of Georgia, but do quite like Gigi / Gia. (Appreciate nicknames develop themselves over time, but would like to encourage a preferred one for family early on!)

Middle names will be family names, Liv Elizabeth.

I prefer Cora personally but Georgia is lovely too

Alloveragain3 · 03/01/2024 00:43

Cora

I find Georgia too masculine

Cora

Georgia 100% and goes well with Anna
Not keen on Cora and I think it'll have a fairly short shelf life before the fashions move on

Painintheback · 03/01/2024 01:23

Cora because I've heard Georgia with two pronunciations ( Jor-ja and Jor-jey-uh). You and dd will always be correcting people as to which it is.

Omma23 · 03/01/2024 01:28

Cora. Beautiful, traditional name but not too many of them around.

vorhees · 03/01/2024 01:54

I loveeee the name Cora. Suggested it to my partner for our girl. He said "no, people will call her pakora toes". He's a fool. The name is beautiful.

Georgia

Onelife2024 · 03/01/2024 07:06

Georgia and Cora are two of my favourite names - we have similar tastes! (I also really love your first dd’s name, Anna!). I’d find it hard to choose between Cora and Georgia too.

Cora - pretty but not twee, short enough not to need a nn, everyone’s heard of it but not over used. Suits all ages.

Georgia - I really love this name - all the Georgia’s I know are pretty and confident women, and go by their full name (no one shortens it). It’s another really great choice.

Sorry, not much help but you can’t go wrong whichever you choose!

WaltzingWaters · 03/01/2024 07:11

I love both! And agree with you on nn for Georgia.
I would pick Cora, slightly wins it for me, but both lovely and neither are too popular at the moment.

RuthW · 03/01/2024 07:16

Cora is lovely and goes with your other child.

Georgia is dated and a 90s name.

whatchagonnado · 03/01/2024 07:19

Cora

Outthedoor24 · 03/01/2024 07:22

Both are lovely. Which one goes better with your second name?

Georgia pronounced properly with 3 syllables is lovely jor-jey-ah. But people have a habit of shorting it to jor-yah.

If that influences your decision.

Georgia

Cora! I have an Anna too and Cora was in the running for DC 2 (we had a boy❤️).
I think they go really well together and have the same feel. It's also nicer to pronounce. I think however hard you try, you'll end up with Georgie by choosing the other.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 03/01/2024 08:26

Georgia!

I don't like Cora. Sounds like apple core. Or corum. It's just odd.

theduchessofspork · 03/01/2024 08:33

I’d go for Georgia personally because it’s very pretty but strong. It was popular around 2000 but you won’t find many now.

Cora is nice too - just less zippy to me- and getting quite popular

Two syllables is definitely the UK pronunciation.

I'm not fussed on Cora, I think Cara is a bit prettier.

Sleepnplay · 03/01/2024 08:55

I much prefer Georgia, don't find it dated or masculine at all! Not keen on Cora.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/01/2024 09:05

Georgia is two syllables. It was very popular here in the1990s but suspect it was just very popular in this town.
Cara is nicer than Cora.

BoleynMemories13 · 03/01/2024 09:06

I've never ever heard Georgia pronounced with 3 syllables. It's Jor-ja, like the state or country. Georgina is 3 syllables, Jor-je-na. However, if you want to shorten to Gia I'm guessing you may be pronouncing it with 3 syllables to get that sound? I honestly think you'll have a lot of pronunciation issues if you do as every Georgia I have ever met (quite a few in the earlier years of my teaching career) has pronounced it Jor-ja.

I think both sound fine with Anna but neither are as classic. Cora is a vintage name on a comeback, Georgia was quite popular in the 00s and is much less so again now. Depends what you're looking for?

Couchant · 03/01/2024 09:19

Cora. I think placenames are tacky. Also, have you been to Atlanta?

lunarodgers · 03/01/2024 09:20

I'd be pronouncing Georgia with 2 syllables as is the common UK pronunciation - anything else I think would be a recipe for disaster! Was just thinking of potential alternatives to George / Georgie.

Family have a history of coming up with "cutesy" nicknames, mainly involving name lengthening - exactly like Georgie Porgie! So if we didn't encourage something different from the get go I know that's 100% what she'd get.

I have not, nor do I have any intention of going to Atlanta! 😂

But Georgia comes from the same origins as George, right? I don't think the name comes from Atlanta.
