Amber

Just wanted some opinions on the name Amber for a girl - I was re-reading the old book Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor which reminded me how much I like the name.

Unfortunately, one of my friends has said that it's a bit of a "trailer trash" name - I had no idea that it had those connotations so I just wanted some other opinions.

Classy or cheap?

And do you think Amber Ivy or Amber Rose work well?

Thanks

Amber Ivy doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely as Amber Rose

RustyBear · 15/03/2008 17:17

MY DD is Amber - she's 18 & a few monthes younger than Simon Le Bon's Amber Rose - which is probably what led to its increased popularity.
Obviously I think it's a lovely name, but I have seen it described as 'chavvy'

MrsMattie · 15/03/2008 17:17

It's pretty common nowadays, or at least, much more common than when I was growing up and only knew one Amber. Now, I know two people who recently called their daughters Amber, and there is one at my son's nursery and another at his toddler group. A pretty name, though, Doesn't have trailer trash connotations to me.

pedilia · 15/03/2008 17:19

DD 14 months is Amber Mya Rose, I only know one other Amber in DS's class.

Tommy · 15/03/2008 17:40

I would agree with your friend, Mavornia.

My cousin called her DD Amber and said it was because she wanted her to have an unusual name - her and half the girls on most council estates round here I'm afraid

Although as a name, it is of course very pretty!!

girlfrommars · 15/03/2008 17:56

Sorry, it's a nice name but has become v. trashy. I think Rose and Ivy are lovely though.

RustyBear · 15/03/2008 18:05

So what would you say makes a name trashy girlfrommars?

Tatties · 15/03/2008 18:15

I think it's a lovely name, didn't know anything about trashy connotations and I don't think I know of anyone called it

girlfrommars · 15/03/2008 18:16

RustyBear the name is nice, but to me it has been tainted by a particular book. You're right, 'trashy' is an overreaction.

RustyBear · 15/03/2008 18:20

It's OK, I'm not offended - as I say, I've heard this before, and I can ignore it because I just think of it as my daughter's name iyswim -I'm just interested why some names become thought of as trashy, while others which are just as common (in the 'used as frequently' sense) don't get that tag.

RustyBear · 15/03/2008 18:21

Which book do you mean btw?

princessosyth · 15/03/2008 18:25

I think it is a pretty name. I think it is sad that once a name becomes popular amongst the working classes it is considered trashy.

girlfrommars · 15/03/2008 18:36

I can't remember the title. I read it a few years ago and it was nothing special. It was also American, so I suppose it doesn't apply in the same way over here. It suggested Amber was a common stage name chosen by strippers.
I suppose certain names have associations in some countries that don't mean anything in others.
I was responding to the OP's request for opinions - she asked if it people thought it was classy or cheap. I was not trying to insult your daughter.

RustyBear · 15/03/2008 18:45

That's OK, I've said I'm not offended!
I'm just interested in why some names get this label & others don't. There are probably more working class Louises or Charlottes than there are Ambers, but those are not seen as trashy - is it because they have more of a history? Or what?

gegs73 · 15/03/2008 18:53

My friend has just had a baby girl she has called Amber and she is def not trashy. I don't know anyone else called this middle class, working class or otherwise!

gegs73 · 15/03/2008 18:57

BTW my DS1 is called Oscar which is hopefully not going to go trashy now there is an Oscar on Eastenders and horror of horrors Kerry Katona was thinking of calling her new son the name too .

I think TV and celebs have alot to answer for when names go bad.

BearMama · 15/03/2008 19:04

Amber is lovely, but does make me think of Simon Le Bon's daughter and the fact that people would think I was copying Yasmin would put me off. Their other daughters are Saffron and Tallulah IIRC.
Duranie? Moi?

PurlyQueen · 15/03/2008 19:28

Kerry Katona is going to call her son Oscar - Well, that's that name off my list

Tommy · 15/03/2008 19:53

you are joking purlyqueen and gegs?

I got there first with DS3

nkf · 15/03/2008 19:54

Amber is a pretty name but it is a bit trendy at the moment.

chipmonkey · 15/03/2008 19:55

I thought Kerry Katone was going to call her son Max?

forkhandles · 15/03/2008 19:59

DD has one Amber at her school and I only know of two. I don't think it's over popular round here or trashy, I like it!!

chipmonkey · 15/03/2008 20:26

I love Amber, btw and I love Rose as a middle name. This baby should have had Rose as a middle name but it turns out she's a boy!

gegs73 · 15/03/2008 20:38

I've just googled and it is going to be Max thank goodness. Oscar was def in the running though a few weeks ago as it sent DH into a panic

southeastastra · 15/03/2008 20:45

no it makes me think of amber alert or red green amber.
