Welsh boy name suggestions for a brother to Rhys

Shkbop91 · 18/12/2023 19:52

We are at loggerheads! DH doesn't like my suggestions and I don't like his, so looking for everyone else's 😂.

My top one so far is Iestyn but I'm not 100% and I'm stumped on a middle name to go with. Ideally would like a Welsh first name. I'm not sure if anyone can make any suggestions, as there isn't 1000s to choose from! 🤦‍♀️

Bowen

I think most of the names I like have been suggested. Are you welsh and in wales? If not, some may be tricky for people to pronounce. I like:

Aled
Dafydd
Efan
Tomos
Jac
Elis
Idris
Macsen
Iwan
Noa
Owen
Wiliam/Wil
Mostyn
Dylan

Would Efan be spelt Ifan? I'm not Welsh but do live in a tiny Welsh village.

Lecc · 18/12/2023 23:07

Evan

DaNiYmaOHyd · 18/12/2023 23:08

@Nineteendays , eu isn't pronounced eye in Welsh.
@Sausager , Efan is a variant of the name Ifan. Both are used and anglicised as Evan.

ladygindiva · 18/12/2023 23:08

Gruffudd/ Griffith. Love it.

No they’re 2 different names. Efan is like Evan but kind of like Ev- van not Ev- un if that makes sense

ifan is like Ee van

no idea if that makes sense. They’re similar but not the same. The first letter sounds are Eh for Efan and eee for ifan

Icelolly999 · 18/12/2023 23:10

Huw or Gethin are nice

No I know- I’m trying to figure out how it’s said when Anglicised

Sausager · 18/12/2023 23:17

Of course, yes. Makes perfect sense! So used to seeing Evan that didn't consider it should be Efan. Ifan was in school with my eldest. Along with a Ioan, Iestyn & Ieuan! 😊

DaNiYmaOHyd · 18/12/2023 23:41

@Nineteendays , I get you. They say Yigh-un.

I'm trying to figure if OP wants a welsh name that works outside Wales or with maybe one side of the family not from Wales. From the OP, I got the impression that she or he wasn't a Welsh speaker in the Fro Gymraeg.

Many popular names have Welsh versions e.g.
Noah - Noah/Noa
George - Siôr
Arthur - Arthur
Leo - Llew
Harry - Harri
William - Gwilym
Edward - Iorwerth, Iolo
Teddy - Iori
Henry - Henri
Hugo, Hugh - Huw, Huwcyn
Jack - Jac, Siencyn
Charles - Siarl
Jacob - Jacob
James - Iago
John - Ioan, Iwan, Ifan, Siôn, ...
Thomas - Tomos
Andrew - Andreas
Mark, Marcus - Marc
David - Dewi, Dafydd, Deio
Guy - Guto
Justin - Iestyn
Peter - Pedr

There are plenty of names to choose from, but not all will work outside Wales e.g. Llyr, Ynyr, Pwyll, Illtud

Garth is a Welsh word but the name/surname isn't Welsh.
I'd imagine that the SE Ieuan's parents use the anglicised pronunciation.

Then you would imagine wrong. It is pronounced the Welsh way by family and friends. I assume Welsh ancestry, though I haven't asked.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 18/12/2023 23:52

Strange name to give a child. The surname seems to be found mainly in North West England. The word comes from middle english.

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 18/12/2023 23:54

Osian definitely. It's my favourite name ever ❤️

CaffiSaliMali · 19/12/2023 08:33

I feel like Rhys goes with lots of names.

Elis
Ioan
Harri
Macsen (Macs)
Owain
Owen
Osian
Tomos

DaNiYmaOHyd · 19/12/2023 09:24

@Shkbop91 hasn't come back.

MabelMaybe · 19/12/2023 09:29

I've always loved Gethin, would go well with Rhys because of the strong G sound

WaitingForMojo · 19/12/2023 11:18

To be fair, most of the names mentioned on this thread are ones that are fairly common names for young children in my area, which is as Cymraeg as they come.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 19/12/2023 12:49

@justasoul , I know a few Tudurs. Nice name but will likely be Tudur Budur.
@BuffaloCauliflower , do you say Eevo or Eyevo?

BuffaloCauliflower · 19/12/2023 12:52

@DaNiYmaOHyd Eye-voh with a hard I. Like Ivy but with an O

DaNiYmaOHyd · 19/12/2023 13:12

Thanks. It's nice but does sound like Ivor. Smile

peaceinourtime · 19/12/2023 15:22

Rhodri or Glyn, though not being in Wales I’m not sure if either is considered dated.
nb I know a 40~ year old Tutor, I never realised that it is a Welsh name

muddyford · 19/12/2023 15:26

Idris
Owain
Geraint
Bryn

devildeepbluesea · 19/12/2023 15:26

DD would have been Taliesin, Tal for short had she been a boy. I love it, and whilst not exactly unusual in Wales it’s not hugely common either.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 19/12/2023 20:33

@peaceinourtime , isn't it a job title? Wink

SillyBub · 19/12/2023 20:39

I have a Iestyn and a Rhys. Ieuan is the one that got away.
