I really like Emma.

Theoldwoman · 19/12/2023 07:09

One hundred percent, ELLA ❤️

Notsoadmirablecrichton · 19/12/2023 07:14

Bit more out there but you could try Etta for a similar sound. I know a lovely toddler one.

SallyWD · 19/12/2023 07:36

I like them both bit would choose Emma. Timeless and classic. There are loads of little Ellas around and it will date

43ontherocksporfavor · 19/12/2023 07:39

For those saying Ella will date- it’s a very old name. It just had a resurgence in the late 90s /early 2000s. Emma has been in and out of popularity too. We have one Emma (8) at my primary and no Ellas at the moment.

FayCarew · 19/12/2023 07:49

Ella and Ellie were probably short forms of other names before the surge in popularity.
Both peaked in the early 2000s, and as short forms of other names as well, they've probably reached saturation point.
I think they'll be dated when trends change.

Candleabra · 19/12/2023 07:51

Both nice names. Depends on your surname which is better. All those m’s and l’s can be tricky with an a sound at the end. See which sounds best.

In the Uk it was usually just a shortform for other names. It’s pretty but doesn’t have the history/cultural history of Emma - Austin, Madam Bovery, Lady Hamilton, a bunch of medieval queens etc

FayCarew · 19/12/2023 09:40

Was trying to work out who Emma Austin was. Smile We have Isabellas and Arabellas in our family history, and they were known as Ella.

Balloonhearts · 19/12/2023 09:41

Emma.

Ella will date quickly and every other kid you meet is called Ella.

bloodyeffinnora · 19/12/2023 09:48

Emma

RuthW · 19/12/2023 12:13

Ella is much nicer

43ontherocksporfavor · 19/12/2023 16:42

As I’ve said upthread, I work in primary and there are no Ellas. There have been none in the last 10 years. There is one Emma. There are a fair few of Florences(5)Olivias (3) and Isabelles or similar (4) so Ella will be fairly new for a newborn.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 20/12/2023 23:25

I love Emma ❤️

Emma

Emma ..beautiful name .

Cheshiresun · 20/12/2023 23:50

Ella, seems quite modern but also classic at the same time.

Emma, seems a little dated, been common for a very long time. Remember several Emma's in my classes at school.

TooOldToTolerateBullshit · 20/12/2023 23:53

Ella definitely. In my mind Emma is the more dated sounding. Poss because of my age - it was very popular when I was at school in the 80s. We have a teenage Ella in extended family. She’s been the only Ella in her class / school since reception - she is in year 11 now!

Groovy48592747 · 20/12/2023 23:54

Emma. Too popular even now, personally I prefer 'Em' or Emily.

Ella - don't know any in our Primary year.

If had to choose between the two I think Ella is a nicer name.

SkaneTos · 20/12/2023 23:54

You will know in your heart which name is the right one.

LadyWithLapdog · 20/12/2023 23:55

I like both. Ella is younger sounding. Emma more classic. You can’t go wrong with either.

35andThriving · 26/12/2023 21:32

Ella belongs more as a name to this generation. Emma is more likely to be seen as a mum name. However, there is a higher chance of having more than one Ella in a class, and therefore being known as Ella D. Or whatever the surname initial is.
