DH and I struggling to agree on a baby name. DH likes Peter and it has family connections to both of us. We both like traditional names but I’m worried it’s not a ‘baby’ name (I know he won’t be a baby forever!), thoughts?

I naturally do not pronouce the T in Peter. May be an area thing but I cant think of anyone I know that would either.

What accent do you have?

To young children, all names of children they know are 'normal' names.
Mostly, but there were 2 girls at primary school with very dated names, and they didn't blend in. The names seemed grannyish at the time but haven't come back into fashion. One of them was a Firstname May not Firstname, and it seemed competely different to the Sarah, Emma, Clare type names of her classmates.

I like Peter. I think it’s lovely for a baby. My baby has a classic name that isn’t commonly used for babies anymore. I quite like it. Everyone has heard of his name and knows how to spell and pronounce it but I haven’t met any other babies called the same thing. It’s like he has a well known name and a more unique name at the same time.

I love it!! We nearly called our DS Peter but went with Thomas :-)

I must be the only one who thinks it’s awful

What kind of names do you like?

Maybe as kids get older they grow more sense of what is 'usual' or 'unusual' but my point was you could have a group of friends in Reception called Jack, Peter, Brian, Olivia, Persephone and Chardonnay and their names will all seem equally 'normal' to each other.

I taught a child last year with a very dated short form as a given name last year (think 'Dave', 'Mike', 'Steve', 'Andy', 'Phil', it was of that style). Every adult in the school commented on how unusual or even 'odd' it was in this day and age to meet a kid called that, and I think a lot of the other parents raised their eyebrows too, yet not a single one of his peers seemed to think it weird at all that he was called that because why would they? If they have 2 best friends called Noah and Gary (for example), to them Gary is going to be as 'normal' a name as Noah for a kid of their age because their experience of names is limited to people within their own social circle.

I think it was possibly a bit different when we were at school because parents chose from a much smaller pool of names back then and you rarely had anyone who was the only one in school. I get that those who were stood out back then. These days kids are called all sorts and so many will be the only one in school, 'normal' name or not, so I don't think primary children these days think anything of it if someone has a name nobody else at the school has. Especially children growing up in very multicultural areas where they're hearing all sorts of different names.

Nope. I think it’s such a dull name but I am not really into ‘classic’ names because I find them dull.

MerryChristmasToYou · 10/12/2023 19:50

I don't think it's dull at all or awful.

PurpleChrayne · 10/12/2023 19:56

It means "to fart" in French.

Other than that, it's lovely.

What do the French call the biblical Peter?

ScarletPower · 10/12/2023 19:59

Great name. My dad is christened Peter but was called Pierce growing up in Ireland. He's back to being Peter now x

ApricotLime · 10/12/2023 20:00

Just googled and see the French call the disciple Peter "Pierre." Wasn't sure if the name would stay the same.

Sohardithurts · 10/12/2023 20:01

I really like it

and for a classic name it’s still unusual whilst not being too ‘out there’

OliviaFlaversham · 10/12/2023 20:05

Love it.

namechangenanny · 10/12/2023 20:08

Can't go far wrong with the apostle names really, classic and always suit all ages. Even Judas has some popularity as Jude. Peter is a beautiful name and is timeless, and I like the idea of a Peter Rabbit or Peter Pan theme for his room too.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 10/12/2023 22:33

Lovely name.
