The name Teddy ?

I have a little boy named Albie and die another baby boy in April! 💙

I love the name Teddy, but I'm not sure if on the birth certificate I should use a "proper" name incase he doesn't like using Teddy at school or work...?

I mean, I know quite a few teddy's nowadays so hoping it's not seen as "unusual" anymore

Theodore

The level of judgement in here is just disgusting, if you don’t like a name or don’t agree there are ways to say that without belittling peoples name choices, opinions or being plain nasty.

To clarify the name Teddy came before Teddy bears. And it’s been around for a long time.

I also hope to god my lovely little boy continues to go by Teddy as he grows up and doesn’t revert to his full name just to prove all the judgemental people on here wrong! He’ll certainly grow up to be better mannered!

Mamabearandcubs · 20/11/2023 07:51

Teddy isn’t unusual these days so I think that’s a lovely name that won’t stand out as unusual when he’s older ! My great grandad was also called Teddy and I’ve always loved it!

We have friends with a baby Teddie. That’s what’s on his birth certificate. They went to register him with the intention of giving him the name Theodore and nicknaming him Teddie, but then the dad said he didn’t like Theodore and they weren’t going to actually call him that anyway, so they just went for Teddie. With ie not y on the end. Doesn’t seem odd to me. Already most people call him Ted anyway

DesertSnow · 20/11/2023 16:07

I'd personally go with Theodore so he has options as he gets older

purpledahlias · 02/12/2023 16:09

The name Teddy came first, before the bear.

But that doesn't really matter... many people DO associate a Teddy with the 🧸 bear. Don't children call their stuffed bears Teddy bears?

Personally I'd choose a longer more formal name so that my child has the option of which nickname (if any) they prefer.

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/12/2023 16:14

Teddy Sheringham was kind of cool back in the day.
But no, I only think of the stuffed kind, probably because I don't know any Teddy's personally.

President of the USA even?

sunglassesonthetable · 02/12/2023 23:27

Watched a rugby match today - two Teddys on the pitch.

No idea if that was their given name or shortened name.

We have a Teddy and that's his name on birth certificate. He goes by Ted now he's older. Pick the name you like. Some will like it and some won't. My parents disliked all the names we picked for our boys - we have a Henry too which my dad thinks sounds pretentious.

Hi hope you don’t mind me asking - now he’s even older, does he like or dislike his name? Considering this for our boy on the birth certificate

lilyandrosa · 17/11/2023 10:54

My son is called Teddy - if you like Teddy, call him it. Don’t call him Edward just because someone thinks it looks better on a birth certificate, or because Edward is a ‘proper name’.
My son is now 11 and has had absolutely no problems with his name whatsoever 🙂

Can I ask does your son still like his name now he’s a bit older? Does he go by teddy or ted? Considering this for our boy

He goes by both! When he started secondary school I remember he wanted his preferred name to still be Teddy as he said that was his name - 99% of his friends call him Ted just out of laziness more than anything! It’s one of those things that now it’s his name it’s just a word if that makes sense, we don’t think anything of it!

How old is he now? Was he just teddy on his birth certificate? Sorry for all questions

He’s 12 now, 13 soon - he’s literally Teddy on his birth certificate. If you love Teddy then absolutely go for that name, don’t call him something else on there just because of the potential thoughts of others - at the end of the day anyone could grow up disliking their name, and just because you gave him a ‘formal’ one on his birth certificate doesn’t mean he’ll use it anyway xx

FoxyLoxyy · 09/07/2025 22:56

My Teddy is 19 now and he’s Teddy on his birth certificate. It was quite the bold choice back then and nobody really was called it

he is known as Ted and refers to himself as that

Rosieposy89 · 10/07/2025 09:44

Albie and Teddy are a bit sickly.
I'd go for Edward and call them Teddy

okydokethen · 10/07/2025 09:52

Teddy has really grown on me, it’s pretty popular.
he could always be Ted if he wanted a more grown up sounding name. Goes nicely with Albie.

Did he ever experience any bullying? I would never call my child Theodore or Theo so don’t want to put that on a birth certificate

FoxyLoxyy · 10/07/2025 14:09

@Mumto4girlies Bullying for what exactly? And nope - never. He’s never even been called what you’d think would be the glaringly obvious ‘Teddy Bear’

Hes just been Ted or Teddy all his life. Remember too - people ‘become’ their names and unless you’ve gone completely batshit with something like, I dunno, ‘Feenixx,’ there’s no need to worry

Sandmaennchen · 10/07/2025 14:25

I would hate to be called Teddy 🧸! So would my husband and son.

There are so many lovely proper names out there.

SunDash · 10/07/2025 16:24

Just give them the full name, Theodore or Edward, and call them Teddy day to day.

SaintGermain · 10/07/2025 18:21

As an affectionate nickname it’s lovely but not as a given name. Think of his name being taken seriously on a job application.

Sandmaennchen · 10/07/2025 21:51

Call your children Dolly, Sweetie, Teddy or Darling affectionately at home, but please give them a normal name for the rest of the time.
