I have a little boy named Albie and die another baby boy in April! 💙

I love the name Teddy, but I'm not sure if on the birth certificate I should use a "proper" name incase he doesn't like using Teddy at school or work...?

I mean, I know quite a few teddy's nowadays so hoping it's not seen as "unusual" anymore

Teddy is now common af and he won't thank you when he's an adult.

sunglassesonthetable · 14/11/2023 14:07

My adult son is Edward but known as Teddy since he was a baby.

It's a grand name.

We are a family that shorten names ( obviously ) and in the family he's often Ted.

Oh dear😂.

Teddy is fine as a stand-alone name. In 2021 Teddy was 26th in popularity. Harry, Archie, Charlie, Freddie, Alfie and Tommy are all above Teddy in terms of popularity. While nicknames as full names isn’t a trend I like, that’s a matter of taste. Due to the massive popularity of these names (Albie, Reggie, Ronnie, Toby, Bobby, Sonny ad Ollie round out the top hundred), they'll be fine names for adults. Personally I prefer a longer name, but he certainly won't be alone. There will be hundreds of thousands of them.

Notmetoo · 14/11/2023 14:16

My husband has a name similar to Teddy which was fine when he was a child..but as soon as he became an adult he hated it and still does because it sounds childish and he has to explain to people that it is his real name.
So I would either use Ted, Edward Theo or something similar as his actual name and just call him Teddy

Did you not worry about this for Albie? Exact same issue, surely?

Exactly this.

Scottyme · 14/11/2023 14:27

This hate the name teddy at least give him a proper name

cheezncrackers · 14/11/2023 14:30

I agree - go with Edward and use Teddy as a nickname. Edward is quite versatile and will allow him to choose what name he wants to be called as he ages. Teddy is fine for a baby, but he won't be a baby for long. One day, he's going to be a man and he may well prefer Ted or Ed or something a bit more adult.

Can you image some old geezer being called Teddy?

Edward and Teddy as a nickname is fine for a child.

Well I can actually. My grandfather was Teddy.

Yes, I can. It's just a name.

So many Teddy’s

verabarbleen · 14/11/2023 17:09

My little boy is called just Ted , I preferred it to teddy as would be better for when he is older but people call him teddy sometimes his little sister calls him teddy and that's really cute but I liked the fact that when he writes down his name in the future it will just be Ted, I see Ted as a really nice strong although not macho man's name

muddyford · 14/11/2023 17:18

Another vote for Edward. Then he can choose whether he keeps a cute name into adulthood. Not keen on Albie instead of Albert either, but that ship has obviously sailed!

HAF1119 · 14/11/2023 17:20

Teddy is a lovely name and if you like it use it

Generally I think use the name you'd like them to be known as, so if you like Teddy, go for teddy. If he wants a more mature name when older he can still shorten to Ted easily

HahahaBoomBoom · 14/11/2023 20:36

I love Ted with the nickname Teddy personally

theduchessofspork · 14/11/2023 21:31

I’d go for Edward or Theodore as a full name (or some variety of Edward like Edwin)

Teddy is in the end the name of a stuffed toy, and I think a lot of Teddies will be pretending their full name is Edward and calling themselves Ed in years to come.

Hermanfromguesswho · 14/11/2023 21:37

My 16 year old Teddy (Edward on his bc) is still very adamant that he is a Teddy, not Ted or Ed or Edward!

bimbombim · 14/11/2023 21:45

atleast teddy has ted as a nickname. not sure how albie is much different to being the same vibe as teddy though?

LulooLemon · 14/11/2023 23:12

Teddy is a great name, but needs a more formal name on birth certificate.

Sandrine1982 · 14/11/2023 23:13

Teddy makes me think of 'teddy bear'. I don't like it at all..

TheFairyCaravan · 14/11/2023 23:18

DS1(29) has a friend, of the same age, from school called Teddy. Apparently he’s named Edward on his BC but I’ve never heard him called that in all the years I’ve known him.

ClairDeLaLune · 15/11/2023 08:28

Can you imagine a barrister called Teddy standing up in court and expecting to be taken seriously? Please don’t inflict your son with such a babyish name.

😂😂😂😂

I think you're bit sheltered. I agree it's useful to have the Edward alternative.

I wonder if Teddy Roosevelt got taken seriously.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 15/11/2023 09:36

'I wonder if Teddy Roosevelt got taken seriously.'

His actual name was Theodore though so at least he had a choice😅
