Thoughts on Rex, have you met anyone with this name? I know for some people there's a dog's name association (although I've never met a dog with this name). Looked it up and it was ranked 142nd for boys names in U.K in 2022 so isn't that uncommon. Other suggestions very welcome just nothing too common like Noah, Theo, Leo, Arthur etc.

Use it as a middle name. Thomas Rex would make for a cool nickname, for instance.

😂😂🤪🤪

naemates · 11/11/2023 23:49

I have a Rex, so I'm a fan!

Saffrom · 12/11/2023 00:13

Nope. Is a cliched dogs name.

locomum83 · 12/11/2023 00:16

What about Felix, as an alternative? I have a friend with a Felix great name I thought

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 12/11/2023 01:17

I’ve only ever known one human called Rex and he was a very posh former Group Captain, delightful though. I have however known several dogs called Rex.

It makes me think of a bouncy golden retriever.
Alec is nice.

Me too, except I don't think I've ever met a golden retriever called Rex.
Could it have been in a film or a book or something?

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 12/11/2023 01:34

Love the name Rex

Woof

My grandfather was named Rex and he hated it because it was a dog's name. It made him a good fighter as other boys teased him by woofing at him whenever he passed.
Please, don't do that to your little boy.

adriftinadenofvipers · 12/11/2023 01:48

It's a dog's name. Only ever knew one human Rex and he'd be in at least his 90s now if he was still alive.

peaceinourtime · 13/11/2023 14:04

i had a work colleague who named her son Rex, this was five years ago. It’s a nice name.

salamithumbs · 13/11/2023 18:34

I do think dog, but I don't know why since I don't think I know any dogs called Rex...but similarly I don't know any dogs called Rover but it's still v canine..
Also makes me think of kings, and the dinosaur from toy story

marshallzumarubble · 15/11/2023 15:09

I have a 17 year old Rex. He has never been woofed at and I think we only ever had one dog comment (by someone who had named her son Michael-Tyson so we had very different taste anyway). Other than that we have had really positive comments, kids seemed to think it was a cool name when he was little, adults commented on how unusual it was (not so much now).

We did have to ask his year 6 teacher to stop calling him Rexicles because he found it embarrassing (sounds a bit like testicles) but she had come up with that due to the Ricicles breakfast cereal.

It is fairly mainstream now with Fern Cotton and Stacey Solomon naming their boys Rex, we know of two others locally.

And I know loads of dogs named Max, Toby, Willow, Mabel, Ronnie and Reggie but no Rexes so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

caringcarer · 15/11/2023 16:03

My Grandads dog was called Rex so for me it's a dog's name.

It’s naff for a person - it means King, so it’s like calling him Prince or Earl

Guy
Blaise
Rafe
Nate (Nathan/iel)
Gabe (Gabriel)
Jules (either as is or for Julius)
Zach (Zachary)
Abe (Abraham)

No one these days names their kids Prince or Earl, (atleast in the UK) which are also English words, whereas Rex is latin and not a name people use interchangeably or commonly for King, atleast not since the middle ages when we stopped speaking latin and Norman-French in the churches and legal theatres.
My Dad is called Rex, and I have never met a dog called Rex, I only know the one from the film 'Babe'. It is a great name, very masculine and roles of the tongue well I thought.

Reddelilah · 12/05/2025 08:01

Yes it means King but this is a ZOMBIE THREAD

I know a dachshund called Rex so I admit that’s my first thought.

My grandog is a dachshund called Rex!

Tbrh · 13/05/2025 21:12

Makes me think T Rex, what about Max instead

TiswasPhantomFlanFlinger · 13/05/2025 22:27

I had an Uncle Rex, born 1932, sadly no longer with us. I do like it was a name, even though it’s a popular dog name, but then many pop dog names are given to humans.
Max, Daisy, Poppy, Charlie, Rosie.

Escapingagain · 18/05/2025 10:04

I’m not a fan my first thought is dinosaurs.
