I know it’s a boys name in Welsh but for a girl? Or perhaps spelt like Arwen LOTR?

It has such a pretty sound.

Have you thought of Anwen if you're wanting a welsh girls' name? Arwyn is very masculine to me.

My old headmaster’s name. Definitely a man’s name.. Not remotely feminine. Just unkind to give it to a girl, and quite unnecessary when there are so many lovely girls names.

I don't think it technically is, my understanding was it was influenced by Welsh for the LOTR character but isn't technically welsh, OP would basically be giving a LOTR name.

I’ve never met an Arwyn/Arwen in real life but I think it’s a beautiful name.

I am Welsh. Arwyn is a boys name. Arwen would be an option for a girl or Arianwen ,Anwen , Awen , Ariana , Arian -loads of options. X

I know a toddler girl called Arwyn. It’s grown on me, I do think it’s pretty but the spelling would be an issue. Wasn’t aware of the male name connotation, it does sound feminine to me!

@PurBal , I think you might have been looking at a duff baby name site. Anwyn is not a name and it's unfortunate. Alwin, usually spelt Alwyn, is not of Welsh origin and is a boy's name.
Anwen and Alwen are both Welsh names for girls.

Slightly relived that there are dreadful baby name sites that muck up Welsh names too —Irish names get mangled on them, given completely incorrect etymologies/spellings etc. or they just present random words or placenames as ‘Irish names’.

I mean, ‘Riley’ (an anglicised version of the Irish surname ‘O’ Reilly’, itself an anglicisation of O’Raghallaigh) has been used as a boy’s name in the US for years, and then started being used for girls, too, and spread to the UK and Ireland. But that does not make Riley a ‘traditional Irish girls’ name’ that somehow means both ‘rye clearing’ and ‘courageous’.

If you’re anywhere near Wales I’d go or Anwen or Olwen which are equally nice IMO and are actually Welsh girls names.

If you aren’t, then crack on - LOTR has made it accepted as a name - I think I would go with Arwen because wyn is masculine and wen feminine.

It looks like the author has looked at some dodgy sites and cobbled something together using cut & paste.

Riley is an Irish girl's name
Riley is a surname and might be from O'Reilly (an anglicised version of the Irish surname ‘O’ Reilly’, itself an anglicisation of O’Raghallaigh) or from the English Rye+Lea.
To say that Riley is an unisex name from a surname or place name meaning rye clearing is ok.
To say that Riley is an irish girl's name meaning rye clearing is not ok.

@PurBal I know a welsh 'Sharn' her parents spelt it that way as they preferred it, her being from wales doesn't suddenly make that name welsh!

As others have said, anything ending ‘wyn’ is masculine. I’d go Anwen personally.
