Possible names that we have not both vetoed are

Maeve
Flora
Cecily
Tessa
Clementine
Faye
Arabella
Anna
Melody
Imogen
Oriana
Meredith
Serena
Allanah
Allegra

I'd go with Serena or Alice from that list.
Imogen and Tessa are also nice.

timoteigirl · 09/11/2023 10:45

Maeve - why not?
Flora - if your daughter looks like it
Cecily - no
Tessa - sounds like fresh outdoorsy girl
Clementine - seems to be popular on this website
Faye - I prefer the spelling Fae
Arabella - m-m
Anna - a classic
Melody - dislike
Imogen -dislike
Oriana - sounds great and not too common
Meredith - m-m
Serena - okayish
Allanah - I would struggle with spelling
Allegra - if it goes with your surname
Camilla - I like it, or Camille
Alice - classic like Anna

HoHoHoliday · 09/11/2023 11:00

FWIW, it's fine to use the same name for your child as friends have used for theirs. Freya is such a beautiful name. If you used it, there will be no confusion at all with your friend's child.

Love!
Flora
Faye
Serena
Camilla
Alice

Maybe
Cecily
Tessa
Anna
Melody
Imogen
Meredith
Allegra

Bin!
Maeve - hate it, sounds like a lame shortening of Mavis.
Clementine - not a fan of fruit names for people.
Arabella - posh girl who rides horses a lot.
Oriana - it's nice but it's a cruise ship.
Allanah - fine if you are naming after an Alan.

Frostine · 09/11/2023 11:06

Maeve lovely
Flora lovely
Cecily nope
Tessa nope
Clementine ok
Faye lovely
Arabella nope
Anna lovely
Melody ok
Imogen ok

Allanah prefer Alana
Allegra nope

Camilla nope
Alice nice but boring

preggo39 · 09/11/2023 11:19

I LOVE Flora and Tessa. Beautiful but simple names that will grow with your baby.

I really dislike Arabella, Melody, Oriana, Meredith, Allanah, Allegra, Camilla. But that's a preference thing - I really don't like fussy names for girls.

The remaining are all fine!

Patchworksack · 09/11/2023 11:25

Maeve - nope, too wet
Flora - spread
Cecily - Beatrix potter vibes
Tessa - horsey
Clementine - orange
Faye - wet
Arabella - horsey
Anna - surprised this got past the ‘overused’ filter - your choice Rosanna is nicer and less popular (or Rosalind)
Melody - prefer Elodie
Imogen - like
Oriana - nope
Meredith - like
Serena - like
Allanah - nope
Allegra - nope
Camilla - horsey again
Alice - like (but also popular)

Your DH is being unreasonable - a lot of your favoured names are classic but not overused now because everyone is so desperate to be ‘un-ee-q’ Tell him he gets to veto 50% of your top ten and you get to veto 50% of his top ten and then you’ll have ten names up for discussion. Agree one of yours and one of his as first name- middle name. By the time you’ve given birth bet you get your choice as first name 😉

I'll give you the name that I've always loved but can't use because I have a friend with the same name - Léonie, nickname Léo. Very French, very cute!

These are mostly his list I am just a lot slower to veto!! As otherwise we are not going to have any left…… The only hard vetos I have used are for Madeleine (as I can’t shake the McCaan association and just see that poor girls face in my minds eye). I also vetoed Constance as he didn’t want it to be a shortened to Connie and I just can’t imagine saying Constance 50 x a day. I also vetoed one other as when I googled with our last name a v adult video web page came up as the top result - a real shame as I otherwise liked the name 😂🙄

my original ideas ( which he did not like) were

more popular options like :
Charlotte
Sophie/Sophia
Bella
Rose
Grace
Maya
Sienna
Louisa
Isabella
Eva
Amelia
Esme
Thea etc

He is not a fan of the “popular and overused”

My original slightly more niche ones were Elise
Juliet
Rosanna
Elodie
Briony
Iona
Cressida .

I have taught for years so went with names I associate with really lovely girls.

names I love but can’t have due to v close friends and family are:
beatrice
felicity
georgia
eliza
freya
selena (checked with friend about considering Serena and she is happy with this and is v blunt & honest)

I'm kinda with team H here wrt popular names.

However, names from your preferred list that I don't think are over popular are:
Louisa
Eva

Names from your more niche list:
Elise - I think this is a very wet/ insipid name
Juliet - smashing name
Rosanna - nice
Elodie - wet/ insipid
Briony - a bit twee
Iona - lovely, but if your surname is a noun it can sound like a sentence
Cressida - Toyota
From that list, I like Iona, Juliet and Rosanna.

  • Suggestion:
Annarose

Your current list:
Maeve - is super-popular, on tbe way to becoming the next Olivia or Ava
Flora - lovely
Cecily - nice, maybe a bit twee, prefer Cecelia
Tessa - lovely
Clementine - teen or tyne? Teen yes, Tyne no
Faye - wet, insubstantial
Arabella - too frilly
Anna - nice
Melody - a bit dated and a bit insubstantial - do you like the nickname Mel?
Imogen - I can't for the life of me see the attraction of this name; it's clunky and the abbreviation Immy is awful
Oriana - oriangutang; no
Meredith - harsh sounding
Serena - a bit dated
Alannah - nice, has a bit of dash to it
Allegra - is an allergy medicine in the US, also a car
Camilla - will be called Cammy or the very popular Millie and fade into all the Ellies and Lilys
Alice - great name

Like:
Flora
Tessa
Clementine*
Anna
Alannah
Alice
Maybe Cecily (but I like Cecilia more).

And:
Iona
Louisa
Eva
Juliet
Rosanna (Annarose)

Ariela · 09/11/2023 17:09

Wait and see what baby looks like and whether the name will suit. Was convinced DD was going to be ash blonde like her father, and she didn't suit a couple of the names by being born with dark hair and eyes

IsThePopeCatholic · 09/11/2023 17:32

Maeve Love
Flora Ok
Cecily ok
Tessa short for Theresa no
Clementine. Awful
Faye awful
Arabella pretentious
Anna ok
Melody silly
Imogen best

Meredith Ok
Serena. Ok
Allanah no
Allegra ok
Camilla awful
Alice ok

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/11/2023 18:07

theduchessofspork · 10/11/2023 22:54

I love Allegra and would go for that
Serena a close second
Meredith in third

Flora and Tessa are nice but not as interesting or distinguished.

Maeve - makes me think of minge and moist and is suddenly fashionable so will date
Flora - nice
Cecily - nice but a bit frilly. Cecile is better
Tessa - nice
Clementine - ok but twee and bit overdone
Faye - too fay. Who wants that? Also dated
Arabella - too frilly
Anna - lovely but overdone
Melody - she’ll be Mel so no
Imogen - ok but being overdone
Oriana - too frilly by half
Meredith - love it

Faye - ok
Arabella - bin
Anna - maybe - timeless but a bit dull
Melody - bin
Imogen - classic but also dull.
Oriana - bin
Meredith - maybe
Serena - maybe
Allanah - bin - just reminds me of Honey Boo Boo

Camilla - love - classic but would spell as Camila
Alice - love
