Ella?

Thoughts on Ella?

Not pregnant at the moment but I’ve been given the all clear on my fertility (stage 3 endo & cysts were removed). While I was under anesthetic, I dreamed of having a newborn daughter called Ella

It wasn’t a name I’ve ever considered, but now it’s just stuck in my head. My mother has always loved the name too, and I was stuck on finding an “honor” name for her (as she hates her own name). Popularity or being considered “boring” isn’t an issue for me either

I really like Ella, it’s popular for a reason and not as overused as some names at the moment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/11/2023 09:31

On a personal level I think it's the worse name ever. I don't know why I have such hatred for it though. Saying that though I can appreciate its a good name and if popularity doesn't bother you then go for it

Dipsomaniax · 04/11/2023 09:33

Ooh, I think its very over used! My 20 yo had 3 Ella's in their class and i still hear Ella/Ellie among younger kids.

I think as a diminutive it would give the child the option to differentiate: Arabella, annabella, isabella, Ellen, etc

theduchessofspork · 04/11/2023 10:50

It’s Ok - there are about a billion Ellas, Ellies and Elles though

Leni987 · 04/11/2023 10:51

I really like Ella - it’s popular but a lovely name. Best of luck OP

Fredblog · 04/11/2023 11:05

Bit boring .. sorry

tiredofbeingadmired · 04/11/2023 11:06

Very overused and also a bit blah

mooncloud1 · 04/11/2023 11:08

I love it, simple but nice and easy to spell. Go for it!

KirstenBlest · 04/11/2023 11:43

Babies called Ella in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Pretty but overused. A bit insubstantial and there are lots of Ellies and names starting with El.

MaloneMeadow · 04/11/2023 14:00

I really like it - I’m the same as you OP! Never would’ve considered it before but for some reason I’m now quite drawn to it. It feels elegant and classy to me whilst still being nice and simplistic. Normally I’d be put off by a very popular name but for some reason it feels different - in 19 year old DD’s year group they are 7 girls called Ella! A lot of them are actually called Isabella though and shorten it.

Theoldwoman · 04/11/2023 14:01

I have an Ella, she loves her name, I love her name, her best friend is Ella.
Classical, elegant and beautiful.

Cinai · 04/11/2023 14:07

It’s on top of my list

tokesqueen · 04/11/2023 14:26

Dull

justjeansandanicetop · 04/11/2023 14:52

It just sounds like half a name to me. Like ending of Isabella, Arabella, Daniella etc.

And personally I dislike long, flowery names like that.

But it's popular, so a lot of people obviously like it, and it's not horrible or anything. And I prefer it to my own name actually Grin

Vanillarose1 · 04/11/2023 15:28

I have an Elysia that we shorten to Ella. Gives her more options growing up.

UpsyDaisy35 · 04/11/2023 15:29

Thanks everyone!

As I said, how common/popular a name is doesn’t bother me. It also doesn’t bother me if people consider it “dull” or “blah” because I’d rather that than names these days that are “unique” (code for “what were your parents thinking?”)

There were 240 girls born in Ireland last year called Ella, and 270 called Ava, which is probably my second choice at the moment 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

LambMomo · 04/11/2023 18:04

I think partly what makes it dull is it’s always paired with Rose/Grace/May. Which are the filler middle names for girls currently.

KirstenBlest · 04/11/2023 18:12

Aren't they usually Ella May or Ellie May, with or without a hyphen?
Ella is much nicer than Ava, which I don't like at all.

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2023 18:55

I just find it unsubstantial and sort of nothingy. It's pretty, I'll give it that, but not strong.

UpsyDaisy35 · 04/11/2023 19:07

@KirstenBlest @LambMomo No, I absolutely wouldn’t use those middle names! They’re lovely, but not my taste at all.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/11/2023 19:15

Lovely name. It’s popular for a reason.

FunkyMonks · 04/11/2023 19:16

Love Ella but I'm very biased my little one is an Ella ❤️🥰

HaplessRhombus · 04/11/2023 19:18

LIt's pretty in itself, just way too overused. Even if the name Ella itself doesn't rank very highly (I haven't looked), if you combine all the very similar names that shorten to Ella/Ellie/Elle then it's probably a lot more common than the stats for Ella alone would show.

FunkyMonks · 04/11/2023 19:18

Also I haven't paired my DD with a middle name like May rose etc something more special and goes well with her name and other important details without giving too much away

JSMill · 04/11/2023 19:21

I work in a school so feel qualified to tell you about the popularity of baby names. Ella was definitely very much in fashion 10-15 years ago but not any more. It's a lovely name, easy to spell and pronounce.
