What are everyone’s thoughts on Ruth? Is it due a comeback? It used to be so popular surely it is!

OP posts:

Absolutely awful. Please don't. It's not pretty at all.

Greeksummer · 04/11/2023 16:48

Sorry but no. It’s truly awful.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 04/11/2023 16:49

I love Ruth, don't understand the ugly comments at all. To me it has quite a soft sound? But very strong too, wearable on any age.

Catandsquirrel · 04/11/2023 16:54

Love these strong, unfrilly names- Ruth, Judith, Harriet, Jane, Susan, Meredith, Maryam, Kirsty.

Whiskerson · 04/11/2023 17:01

I think it's simple, nice and refreshing. Stands out in an understated way. Familiar and classic, but not popular.

KeepJoggingOn · 04/11/2023 17:04

It's a good strong name, one of my favourite authors Ruth Rendall.

Wavessea · 04/11/2023 18:29

Absolutely awful.
please please don’t give your kid one of the ugliest names
it’s my middle name and I’m laughing at the positive comments because you probably wouldn’t be too happy if you were saddled with this name

Moveoverdarlin · 04/11/2023 18:35

It’s not classic, it’s dated. There’s a difference. Elizabeth, Victoria, Charlotte, Anna, Alice and Emily are classic, but Ruth is just plain old fashioned. I think it’s awful. I picture a 75 year old librarian, with holes in her cardigan.

Lesserspottedmama · 04/11/2023 18:40

I think it’s a very beautiful name, so interesting to see the marmite-like responses it seems to incur! It just seems elegant in an understated way. We could never use it, too many delightful people in our life to turn it into ‘Roof’.

Thudercatsrule · 04/11/2023 18:42

Goonies! Sloth! RUTH, RUTH, BABY RUTH!!

Sorry OP 😂

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 03/11/2023 23:02

It's very unfair of me, but it always makes me think of the scene in friends when Rachel and Ross are talking about names for their baby.

Ross "how about Ruth?"
Rachel "I'm sorry, are we having an 89 year old?"

I also don't like the sound.

However, whatever name you suggest will have people who love it and people who don't. There's not much point canvassing opinion (I know I've still given mine, but only because you asked).

It has the benefit of being unusual but not unheard of or hard to spell. And is traditional but not overused.

I immediately thought of Friends too, lol. Not a fan of the name, sorry.

Goodfrock · 04/11/2023 18:48

It's my name. It's true some people can't say it, but I don't have any strong feelings against it.

You don't often come across another, but when you do they always seem to be strong accomplished women.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/11/2023 18:51

Love it! Beautiful name.

I wasn't given a middle name by my parents and when I was a little girl I pretended that my middle name was Ruth.

One of the most wonderful people I know now is called Ruth - just love her and love her name ❤.

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2023 18:53

I like short, neat simple names in general, but not this one. I don't like the sound.

ChainBastard · 04/11/2023 18:54

I love it. The Ruth I know is unshakeable, totally has her shit together and is also gorgeous and hilarious. Go for it!

soundsys · 04/11/2023 18:57

Really like it. Like a PP I've never met a Ruth I didn't like!

PurpleChrayne · 04/11/2023 19:01

I love Ruth! Narrowly missed out on calling DD this. We went for the other female name in that Bible story instead!

The only thing that stopped us choosing Ruth is that DH is Israeli, and in Hebrew it's pronounced "Root" which I dislike.

Goodfrock · 04/11/2023 19:04

Loving the fact Ruths seem to be popular people 🤣

Mwnci123 · 04/11/2023 19:05

Love it. Do it.

GodDammitCecil · 04/11/2023 19:06

Permission to veto.

Orchidgarden · 04/11/2023 19:07

Ruth is a lovely name.

SequinBear · 04/11/2023 19:12

It's my name. I like it. Very happy with it.

(Didn't as a teen, but I think that's a usual phase for many people; in my 30s now).

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 04/11/2023 19:13

I think it's a very harsh and blunt name.
My name is also considered to be like that and I hate it.
I would have loved a frilly name.

EcoCustard · 04/11/2023 19:13

I love it. It’s a classic, strong name with a lovely meaning and the Ruth I know is smart, funny and confident and good to people, planet & animals. It’s refreshing in a world of Ava’s, Emily’s & Jessica’s.

AnimalPark · 04/11/2023 19:14

I don't like it at all. I picture Ms Trunchbull when I hear that name for some reason.
