What are everyone’s thoughts on Ruth? Is it due a comeback? It used to be so popular surely it is!

Love it

Ruth, yes.
It's like Naomi, Mirriam and Rebecca.

ViaRia01 · 04/11/2023 03:40

I know a baby Ruth (well, toddler now). I was slightly taken aback when we first met as I just wasn’t expecting to hear that name again, but obviously very quickly you get used to it and you don’t think of old ladies anymore

Hotchocolatemousse · 04/11/2023 03:53

I like it, I used to know an Eva Ruth and the combination of the two Biblical names together worked.

whatausername · 04/11/2023 04:02

I work with one. She's nicknamed Ruthless. She's not even that bad, it's just when your name means compassion your behaviour can stand out more 😂

Glitterbiscuits · 04/11/2023 06:05

Yes! It's excellent. I can see it working for all ages too.

Good choice. Unusual but not weird.

CurlewKate · 04/11/2023 06:31

I live in an area where very many people can't say -th. So no. Otherwise, I think it's a lovely name.

Wonderfulz · 04/11/2023 06:33

Love it

Talkingtothecat247 · 04/11/2023 08:49

I think it's one of those "marmite" names that people will either love or hate.

I always find it refreshing when I hear a name that hasn't been in popular use for decades.

Now I think about it I have only ever met one Ruth in my entire lifetime.

ElectricMagpie · 04/11/2023 09:03

FGS no. I'm a Ruth and when yelled across the playground sounds exactly like a dog bark. Also the 'th' phonic means the majority of the global population can't pronounce it.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 04/11/2023 09:19

No. Quite an ugly name. Don't like it at all.

18Piccolinos · 04/11/2023 09:21

I like it!

Scottyme · 04/11/2023 09:38

Depends where you live. But I'd say dont do it to your baby! I hate my name as I always get called Roof and have done for the last 40+ years

SageRosemary · 04/11/2023 09:41

I love it, used it as a middle name for DD. I think the name sounds strong, not harsh. We often use Ruthie as a pet name at home, just ourselves.

StillWantingADog · 04/11/2023 09:41

I like it.
but not with an Estuary English accent (“roof”!)

Threewheeler1 · 04/11/2023 09:47

It's my name 😁
I've only personally known a few others, mostly a couple of generations older than me.

I have a lot of siblings and we all have welsh or biblical names.
It also has a bit of family history attached and I love that.
Friends and family call me Roo or Ruthie.
It's not been a burden and there aren't that many about but, as shown upthread, it's definitely a Marmite name 😬!

BarelyCoping123 · 04/11/2023 09:47

No

peaceinourtime · 04/11/2023 09:52

Ruth is lovely name and refreshing compared with all the other names that have come back into fashion, go for it.

Slipknotted · 04/11/2023 09:54

I like it. It has the right kind of plainness.

However, other posters are probably right to point out that significant numbers of the population pronounce ‘th’ as ‘f’, which might be nearly unbearable.

JaninaDuszejko · 04/11/2023 10:04

She won't be able to be a pirate because pirates are ruthless 😀

I love the name.

I agree. We nearly chose Katherine for DD2, but I decided I didn't want to listen to people pronouncing it "kaffryn" so we went for something else.

Hotchocolatemousse · 04/11/2023 10:23

How about Anna instead if you're worried about the mispronunciation of Ruth. Again, Anna is a timeless, elegant name which ages well with a person.

Riverlee · 04/11/2023 10:24

All the Ruth’s I know are bc strong women.

CurlewKate · 04/11/2023 10:32

I remember the first birthday card ds wrote all by himself. He could say his -ths, but he still wrote "Hppy Birfdy Efan" I do wish I had kept it!

MarzipanKnees · 04/11/2023 10:33

I think it’s beautiful and gentle.
