@elm
Ellen is a female given name,a diminutive of Elizabeth, Eleanor, Elena, and Helen.
It's a given name, and means the same as Elena and Helen, but it's not a diminutive of any name.

Pemba · 23/10/2023 11:57

I would think Ellen is actually a variation of Helen, rather than a diminutive. A diminutive of Helen would be Nell or Nellie maybe, just as Lizzie is a diminutive of Elizabeth.

In the same way Hannah is a variation of Anna (or the other way around), Elisabeth is a variation of Elizabeth, Carolyn is a variation of Caroline. Names that are spelled and maybe pronounced slightly differently, but basically the same name, with the same origin.

But sometimes the name has varied so much that people don't realise it's basically the same name. Like when somebody wanted to name their DD Isabel Elizabeth! (Isabel being the Spanish form of Elizabeth).

Ellen and Patrick.

HerMammy · 23/10/2023 14:11

@MerryChristmasToYou
I posted it was a diminutive of Helen, as it's a very commonly used one here in Scotland and is widely recognised as such, yes it can be a name in its own but I'm sure you know better than generations of people.

diggermama · 23/10/2023 14:18

Another vote for Max here! I may be biased though. It's also lovely to see lots of other people think it's a gorgeous name too.

Robin for a girl is beautiful.

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/10/2023 14:26

@HerMammy , I'm not the only one disagreeing with you.

martinisforeveryone · 23/10/2023 15:32

There's no point squabbling, there's a tradition in Scotland but in my English family the name Ellen goes back generations as a stand alone name. I wouldn't say either is necessarily wrong it's just the way it is.

I do always find it a bit odd that Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy called their two sons Johnny and Jack, which used to be regarded as essentially the same name, with Jack deriving from John going back to medieval times. That said I think it may be a family connection to John and these days no one's going to mix them up as the same person because both names are widely known in their own regard.

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/10/2023 20:42

@martinisforeveryone , Jack has traditionally been used for someone called John for a long time, but the name Jack is from Jacob.
Two brothers called Jacob and James would effectively have the same name.

I know two sisters with variations of the same name, something like Lisa and Lizzie. It always seemed a bit strange but maybe the parents liked both names so used them
