Hyphenated first names?

Sunmoonstars33 · 20/10/2023 16:50

My DH chose the name for our baby who is due in 3 months. Its a name that has a lot of meaning to him and as I basically chose the names of our last two children (we agreed on them together and he likes them its just they were suggested by me) I think I want to use his chosen name for this child. However this name is only two letters.
The name is Io (eye oh) as in one of Jupiter's moons. My husband loves anything to do with space.
I just feel like Io is very short so I was considering hyphenating it with another more traditional name to make it longer?
I wondered what peoples thoughts were about this.... the name we would use is Celeste. So it would be Io-Celeste.
I've never actually met anyone with a double first name but I know they are common, lily Rose, Anne Marie, Lisa Marie, etc
Interested to hear peoples thoughts

Io is nice. Io-celeste is weird.

YomAsalYomBasal · 20/10/2023 18:49

Io is bad enough, please don't give the poor child a hyphen as well.

Sunmoonstars33 · 20/10/2023 18:54

@TemporarilyshyAF one of those is my name! And I do get asked how to spell it and it is considered 'out there'.. and it does have a dark tale involving SA attached to it as per many Greek myths. Ive always liked my name though and honestly do not see why people think its such a big deal to have to spell your name to people sometimes? That happens with extremely common names too as there can be variations of spelling with those.. for example Kristin, Kristen, Kirsty, Kirstie, Kirstin etc theres loads like that.. even Sarah/Sara
No I don't think I will be hyphenating it now. Mumsnet has spoken lol.
But im sticking with the name Io. That wasn't up for debate.

Hahahaha!

But seriously what about Iona instead?

Edited

Just what I was going to suggest! I went to school with a lovely girl called Iona.
No idea of its origins though.

OP my husband has a peculiar name, it’s a proper pain in the arse having to repeat it, spell it, explain it. Every sodding time. He’s prefers to be known by an unrelated nickname…

oldnorsesaga · 20/10/2023 19:14

You're not really choosing hyphenated first name - you're choosing first and middle and making them tied. I don't mind Io and Io-Celeste is fine. I would tell you to drop the hyphen, but in this case it looks better than Io Celeste.

LylaLee · 20/10/2023 19:20

Io can be her middle name. It can be the name your husband calls her, like a special bond between them.

But why DELIBERATELY make life hard for your child?

The laugh your DH got for his name at the wedding - except for his daughter it's every single day (even if they don't laugh in her face). EVERY single time she has to introduce herself or fill out a form it will be a whole production.

Get him to read this thread. It seems like he's blinkered by his cute story: (I was writing a dissertation on Io when I realised I loved OP!) But has forgotten this is a human being's actual name.

@SkyePye two in Scotland wow! Its on the up!!

Guys the name Io is not up for debate. That will be her first name.
Yes I'm aware of the Greek goddess. I am also named after a Greek godess with a dark story!! And my husband has the middle name of a Greek hero who died horribly lmao... this is the way with those names!

I was just wondering about hyphenating it with Celeste. That is what I was asking about. Husband is completely set on Io and I won't be 'putting my foot down' as I think its a beautiful name myself and it means something to me that he chose it.

And I wouldnt worry about bullying. I live in an area rife with quite out there names. In my daughters class there are two Ophelias, a Florian, an Atlas, a CeCe... one of my sons friends is called Lux. Thats his real name, Lux.
Io will be fine 😄

OP I’m willing to argue that all of those names are miles more socially acceptable than Io. Don’t do it, you’re having a child not a social experiment. Poor kid

MaloneMeadow · 20/10/2023 19:27

@LylaLee very well said

MyAnacondaMight · 20/10/2023 19:39

I don’t see what’s wrong with Io. It’ll land easier in east london vs the north east, but it’s a proper name and spelled how it sounds. No issue.

Celeste isn’t a good match as a second name - agree it’s like naming your child Daisy Flower. Step away from the celestial space, and away from the hyphens.

bakewellbride · 20/10/2023 19:43

"And I wouldnt worry about bullying. I live in an area rife with quite out there names." But your child is extremely unlikely to just be in that area for their whole life. They will grow up and probably want to live somewhere else / travel / whatever. What bizarre logic.

CountTo10 · 20/10/2023 19:43

Have you never seen Snow White???

'Eye-oh, eye-oh it's off the work we go'. That was my first thought!
Poor thing is going to get a life time of that along with how to spell it, say it etc. etc.

bakewellbride · 20/10/2023 19:44

At least they can change it when they're 18.

fetchacloth · 20/10/2023 19:46

CurlewKate · 20/10/2023 17:08

I don't like hyphenated first names- people will drop the second one anyway!

I like Io. The only problem is that people might think it's Lo.....

I was born with a hyphenated first name and hated it.
I changed it by deed poll when I could, so I retained my first name, and the second name became my middle name.

bakewellbride · 20/10/2023 19:46

@CountTo10 exactly. When I was a teacher I once did supply with a child with a hyphenated name. He was miserable. I did my best with it during the register but he was pleading with me to just use one part of his name which I obviously did immediately but he was just so sad due to his name and I'll never forget him. He just wanted a normal easy name. Poor boy.

Goodornot · 20/10/2023 19:46

I wouldn't. Jupiter has more than one moon. Why not Callisto which is another of Jupiter's moons.

kkkkleeee · 20/10/2023 19:47

I think lo-Celeste has a lovely ring to it. Don't worry about other peoples opinions. My whole family said they hate hyphenated names before I told them I hyphenated my oldest name. Her name is Frankie-Leigh and yes she uses both. It is a mix of mine and her dad's middle names together. If you want to hyphenate it then do it. I love the name.

Sleepyquest · 20/10/2023 19:47

I know of an Io. I think it's cute. Just go for one or the other

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 20/10/2023 19:52

I like it!

I think little Io will find it a relief not to be called Ella or Amelia or any of the other overused names.

Ditch the hyphen.

For a middle name you can use one of the many other ‘space’ names - Rosalind, Ariel, Titania, Miranda, etc.

I think Io is lovely. Don't spoil it with a hyphenated second name. I loathe those Lily-Mae, Lola-Rose sort of names. Very 'Love Island' and a bit crass.

Io may be short in letters but is the same as any other two syllable name.

A middle name as well would be fine, just not a hyphenated one linked to Io.

Keep it pure and simple. If you want Celeste as well, then name her Io Celeste [surname], but not not Io-Celeste which takes away the beauty of Io on its own.

KingsleyBorder · 20/10/2023 19:55

The beauty of Io is its brevity, it sounds quite classy as a standalone name. Provided that the capital “i” is read as an “I”, it is actually pronounced exactly as it is written.

And I disagree that people will read it as Lo, unless they are really stupid and forget that we write names with capital letters…

Anyway, as you said, Io is a given and not up for debate, so just reassuring you that it is a nice name and sounds like it will fit right in in your social circle. It does not need any embellishment with a hyphenated second part, and all that would happen is that the more recognisable second part would be the bit that people seize upon because Io is unfamiliar. Don’t detract from Io!

(Also, hyphenated first names are a bit vulgar in the UK IMO)

Goodornot · 20/10/2023 19:55

Io - I owe you...

I used to have a hyphenated first name. I got equal numbers calling me the first part, the last part, and both.

I never really knew who I was!

I hated it so changed my name by deed poll.

As we progress away from handwritten information and use keyboards more and more, it will look like Low.
There is no getting away from that.
Bare in mind that when she is an adult, she will most likely work alone at home. Again this is the way life has going. Nobody will hear her name, they will only see it on an email. They will think it is Lo (Low). However if you really are set on it then I think Celeste does go with it.
If you want Celeste as part of her first name then hyphenate it.
