Two middle names?

Hobnobs88 · 12/10/2023 12:29

Hi everyone. I’m due a baby girl in 3 weeks and we’ve decided on the name Charlotte. For the middle names I would like two; Matilda May. Matilda as it’s one of my favourites and May as it’s a family name and it means a lot for me to use it.
My DH thinks it’s daft to have two middle names and thinks we should pick one or the other, as it will be difficult for her to fill in forms etc when she’s older (?) Our surname is Wallis.
What are people’s thoughts? Thanks x

Such a beautiful name OP! Nothing wrong with two middle names imo.

Lovely! My kids both have 2 middle names, as does my mum, dad and brother ... I only got 1 🥺

StillWantingADog · 13/10/2023 08:01

Both of mine have two. We couldn’t agree on one so basically picked one each.

they’re never ever used. It’s fine.

My friends didn't give their child even one middle name which I found very odd. She's just Firstname Surname.

Just to say, if it's REALLY about form-filling, most forms don't REQUIRE you to state your middle name(s), only things like passport, driving licence.

Growlybear83 · 13/10/2023 09:09

My husband has two middle names and has always hated them. I've never used my middle name either - my parents saddled me with initials which spelled a word and my married name didn't make things any better. I think it's much easier to give children just one name.

thorneyislanddoris · 13/10/2023 09:29

I've got 2 middle names. It's really annoying on forms. Often one gets dropped. It's also annoying with initials. I've got 4!

nickelbabe · 13/10/2023 09:33

Two middle names is absolutely fine.
your dh is overthinking it.

The reason for middle names is it makes your name more distinct from others who may have the same name first and last name.

So if your name is say "Brian May" then if you have one or more middle names especially if one of them isn't common standard it narrows it down to you especially for international travel and for credit checking.

Just asked my daughter how she feels about having two middle names now she’s older and has forms and stuff to fill in and she says she loves it. She’s the only one of her friends to have two middle names and thinks it’s nice because it makes her feel unique 😊

withlovefromlou · 13/10/2023 10:29

I only have a first and surname. Although my name is Louise and I feel like nothing really goes after it, it’s more of a middle name itself 😂

LT1982 · 13/10/2023 13:52

Are you of à religion that involves confirmation names? If not go ahead

Fishwiife · 13/10/2023 21:08

Two middle names here… running out of space on forms has always been tricky but nowadays with everything online not so much. I love my two middle names because they are unusual an they mean something

ProfSleepzz · 13/10/2023 21:19

Another one with two kids who have two middle names. My lg is first name two syllables, middle name 1 three syllables, middle name 2 two syllables and a two syllable-impossible-to correctly-pronounce surname and my lb is three syllables- one syllable- two syllables- weird surname 😂 they both love their names, as do I.

raffathegaffa · 13/10/2023 21:27

My son has 3 middle names😂 2 for his grandads and one name we actually like haha

Singleandfab · 13/10/2023 22:22

I’m the same… my mum (middle name plus her family name) dad (gets called by his second name but has a first and a third family name) and my younger brother (middle name after my grandfather and the same paternal family name) so they all have two middle names but they only bothered with one for me (after my paternal aunt) I think it’s a bit weird and insulting not to treat both children the same tbh. Why wasn’t I given my mum’s family name?

CatherineEarnshawsGhost · 13/10/2023 22:50

Another one with two middle names here. I I’m named after both my aunties (my mum‘s sisters). I don’t use both on my passport though, just chose one to keep things simple.

My OH is Italian and he thinks middle names are bit ridiculous as they’re not much of a thing over there. We have a two month old and I had to fight to put a middle name on his birth certificate (named after my big brother). I sent off my son‘s documents to the consulate last week to get his Italian passport, but it won’t contain his middle name as it would give the impression he has a double-barrelled name, like an aristocrat.

The passport thing is something to bear in mind anyway…

I personally absolutely HATE having two middle names. I feel embarrassed when I have to rattle of four names when saying full name. Feels like total overkill and completely unneccesary, it's always annoyed me. You do you though.

TiredMummma · 13/10/2023 23:31

Brilliant choices and go for two middle names. I did and it took no time at all completing her passport application which is likely the only time you need to use both other than the electoral roll. I don't use my middle name for anything really - it gives your daughter a choice

LinaM20 · 15/10/2023 08:44

I work with people from all over the world, some of them have 5 or 6 names. (The Spanish love multiple names). Some nationalities only have one name, including on their passport which does cause issues when filling in forms, but most forms are set up for multiple names.

My niece was Charlotte Wallis, before she married! 🥰

Prettydress · 15/10/2023 11:13

Lots of people in Wales traditionally have two middle names so quite normal here. Mathilda-May double barrels well too , so could technically be one middle name if your husband is going to be difficult. I always think mum should have final say considering they carry and birth. Almost like chef's treat 😂

I sometimes don't give them or on forms use initials it's not like most forms need them.

Fromage42 · 16/10/2023 16:22

I have three middle names (long ones too) and I’ve only had an issue filling in forms twice in 30odd years… The only time my parents regretted it was when they bought me one of those trains with all the carriage letters to spell out my whole name and it cost them a small fortune haha. Charlotte Matilda May sounds lovely.

SneezyEvie · 17/10/2023 11:52

Charlotte Matilda May Wallis is lovely!

I do also like Matilda Charlotte May.

Matilda was my favourite name and I had to compromise due to DH hating it. I still get a pang of longing when I hear another mum calling it out and my DD is nearly 3 :(

Perhaps try for it one last time after she is born?

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/10/2023 11:53

People only ever hear middle names at birth, christening, marriage and death - so pick whatever you like and as many as you like.

Your choices are nice.
